Russia is having to reduce that city to rubble Grozny style now that they are too deeply committed to change course. And that is proving costly and damaging both militarily and in terms of PR.

So rather than repeat the same mistake only on a much larger scale with Kyiv and Kharkiv etc, what the Russians are doing is instead drawing the Ukrainian defenders out to the defensive lines on the outskirts and surrounding towns and villages around Kyiv, where they can engage in a much cleaner fight and where Russian firepower dominance is far far more telling and effective.

That’s the main reason the Russians have made zero attempts take out Zelensky. Because his idiotic leadership is one of Russia’s biggest assets right now since the comedian is so obsessed with the media war he cannot see how he is loosing the actual long term fighting chance of the Ukrainians to achieve more Reddit karma and Twitter likes.

The west will fight Putin to the last Ukrainian, and Zelensky is proving to be the kind of mindless puppet who would gladly do it for them, and in the worst Hollywood-fictional-heartless-Soviet-leader style, with his Molotov Grandma and pick-up-what-you-need-from-the-battlefield-dead ‘strategies’.

So Putin is using that to his advantage and creating a massive meat grinder outside Kyiv for Zelensky to blithely throw all his manpower into so the Russians can move into Kyiv later on to a depleted defence and take the city with far fewer losses and in a much more intact way than they could possibly hope with a Leningrad re-enactment as a fully assault right now would be.

The Kiev situation is a strange one. There's been virtually no resistance to their presence in the outskirts of Kiev. We would have seen hundreds of burnt out tanks on western media, and Russia would have cut off electricity and supplies to the city. Yet everything remains largely intact, the bridges haven't been destroyed, Russians are even allowing supplies to come in. Russia could have completely blockaded Kiev with artillery in their current position if they wanted to.

I suspect there is no big Ukrainian presence in Kiev itself or the surrounding area. Videos and pictures coming from Kiev support that. Very little presence of the state/police - I assume they've all been drafted. Most of the policing is being done by militias.

My impression is that the Russians are happy with the way things are, the Ukrainian army is slowly getting destroyed in the east as they retreat. The more anarchy in Kiev, the more likely they'll be welcoming Russian soldiers to restore order when the time comes. They're hoping it'll be more like the fall of Kabul than Grozny.

They'll avoid entering Kiev if they can, they will just blockade it until they get a surrender and disarmament from the garrison there. That could be done with a UN sponsored corridor like in Syria, but I think they'd just prefer a regular one. That way the Nazis can't run. We'll also find out if Zelensky was in Kiev after all and not Poland or Israel like many suspect. At this point I think the only way he can escape is in the trunk of a civilian car. Even with the most optimistic Ukrainian picture, he knows his country is doomed. Is he going to carry on lying to his people that things are going well? So far it's still Baghdad bob type delusion - Ukrainians are pushing back Russian soldiers, we'll soon be at the gates of Moscow, etc. I wonder how much of what he says is his own words and not whatever NATO has told him to say.

Also it seems that Russians aren't offering Nazis the option of surrender. There were broadcasts played last night to Mariupol regular Ukrainian soldiers can surrender, Azov and other Nazis can't. In Syria they always gave ISIS and other militants the surrender option which most eventually took.

The guys in east are vetted nazis .

They terrorised the russian population for close to a decade, killed countles of them, they know that there is no mercy for them.

C'mon, what is the reason of the guys in Mariupol still fight to the last man ?

If you are an American CIA warhawk, you schizophrenically shift between "China copies/steals from Russia, Zero innovation" and "Russia requests high-end equipment from China, accomplice bad guy to imperialism".

In reality, Russia asked about Chinese equipment BEFORE the invasion, not in response to the invasion. Russia has long been aware of Chinese advances in Drone technology and discussion about military purchases have been ongoing for long time. It's another US attempt to frame the situation as China aiding an imperialistic war, when it's just routine military sales for long time.
