Its war, and that is always bloody and brutal. Actions taken are unjust in the eyes of all. In war both parties will make their hands dirty. Russians do too.
But if people suffered enough, they should surrender to evade more death and destruction. This option is always possible. It is in the hands of the defenders to decide. Would the Russians kill all POWs plus all civilians?
If the defenders choose to fight till the last bullet and the last drop of blood then they pay a high price. If the defenders take additionally their own civil people into custody, it is their cynical choice.
They all might be seen as heroes of their nation. But the biggest gift of all is life. First aim in war for the individual is hence to survive!
If the defenders throw they most precious gift away in vanity, it is their insane choice. A dead hero is - for the most part - worth nothing. The world is full of graves of dead heroes that perished for some mystical "pride", "nation" or "values".
War tear families apart and produces tons of widowers, widows and orphants. Destruction to homes, both the souls of mankind and materials. Classic human style.
If the kings and presidents have the power and will to stop the war, do it. If not, do not blame others and do not pull in other nations.
