When I read that BBC is independent news sources, then I know these people are just Western agents.

Facing a better-armed Russian force, Ukraine has chosen to fall back to cities, defending from within, rather than chance facing Russian tanks and aircraft in the open, making Moscow’s work harder. “Clearing military units out of cities is just a long, slow, laborious process,” Mr. Reynolds said.

Before the invasion, the Kremlin predicted a friendly reception from locals in Ukraine, and mass desertions from the Ukrainian army into Russian ranks. The Russian line was essentially that Ukrainian people were pro-Russian but held hostage by a U.S.-backed government opposed to Moscow.
As a result, Russia appears to have invaded Ukraine with a much smaller force than it needed, said Seth Jones, a director at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, in Washington.
Mr. Jones said Russia has mobilized about 190,000 troops for its operations in Ukraine to subdue a population of more than 40 million. France had a similar population when Nazi Germany invaded in 1939 with a force of three million.
A second mistake, Mr. Jones said, is that Russia has failed to block supply routes that are feeding Ukraine’s defense with Western antiaircraft and antitank weapons. “It’s a huge military blunder that a ton of stuff is still coming in from the West,” Mr. Jones said.

agreed but also I think Russia now realised that with Ukraine and Turkey doing all these deals in 5 years time it will be much harder to take Ukraine out

Ukraine also allocated billions for building a new Black Sea naval fleet to rival that of Russia and had shown interest in Foreign submarines

had these deals materialised it would be a really hard graft for Russia to take out Ukraine

so I think its a combination of time running out and also Russia being quite trigger happy

I mean they went for it in Kazak unrest just last month, North/South Ossetia, Georgia, Crimea, Inigushetia and even Transnistria
You have to think - wtf is Ukraine doing with all this military hardware? Ukraine's GDP per capita in 1991 was around $4000 USD - but back then, a developed country was only $10000 USD GDP per capita. Before the war its GDP per capita is still $4000 USD. Now it's probably down to Afghanistan level.

Maybe if they were a large country all that spending is spread out onto everyone. But Ukraine is just 40 million people. A country at that level, fighting with a much bigger neighbor, is not going to do well. Russia has GDP per capita 3x higher than Ukraine.

BTW, you know why the Ukrainian Navy is so small? It wasn't before. Almost all their ships were just captured at dock in 2014.

huge corruption, huge plundering of wealth during the 1990s after half a dozen failed governments

they did slightly better from 2000-2014 but after Russian took Crimea they also lost largest trading partner

Belarus on the other hand has higher GDP per capita than Ukraine

that is quite unbelievable

Defensive networks in Odessa; they’ve had over a week to prepare for a potential Russian invasion; volunteers and military personnel have been working day and night setting up fortifications.

Ukrainian naval infantry in the region have warned civilians to avoid littoral and coastal areas due to heavy mining.

Odessa is unlikely to capitulate without a fight.
Isn't it easy for the russian ships to just demolish those defences with naval artillery?

Z car rally, which took place in all 85 regions of the Russian Federation, in support of our country, the President, the government and the military The most numerous columns moved in Moscow and the Moscow region.

There's whole lot of luxury cars there.
I can easily spot several Mercedes models (including G wagon) and a Rolls Royce there.
Does this reflect somehow the attitude of the wealthy russians towards their government?

The West is just confiscating the money of those Russians who had money abroad. Who do you think they hate more right now?
The majority of the population never had money abroad to begin with. So they won't care.

The West did a great job galvanizing the majority of the population in Russia. Not that there were major cracks to begin with.

I agree China can play a great role here

also they should pump billions into Russia to stabilise the Russian economy, Russian wont forget the favour even after 100 years

also China should learn the lessons where Russia failed
No - if they did that it would only sow discontent towards Chinese amongst Russians. How Russians view Chinese is not much different from how the Europeans view Chinese.

Russia is not China's ally or friend. The two countries are just currently in a partnership of convenience due to common interests and perceived threats, mainly hegemonic Western imperialism. Russia would betray China the instant it would be in her advantage to do so. Don't forget, Russia has supplied advanced military equipment to just about every unfriendly neighbor that China has apart from Taiwan... even South Korea!

China must view Russia as a carefully managed partner rather than a strategic ally. Otherwise, China will only end up burnt in the end. Doubtlessly, in Putins mind, the USSR has suffered a betrayal from China in the Cold War and he would not hesitate to return the favor as long as it benefits him to do so.
