Saw an interesting tweet about Type 056.

Below the Type 056 Frigate designation are:

length: 88.9 m
width: 11.14 m
Maximum speed: 25 knots
Endurance: 2000 nautical miles
Standard displacement (everything except fuel and water): 1220 tons
Maximum displacement (everything including fuel and water + overload): 1340 tons
Weapon suit

FFC0WHOaQAM1XSF
well, 2000nm endurance is enough

One of Washington's attack vectors has been that China has the world's "largest" Navy.

Everyone here knows this is a typical BS claim, however China does respond to criticism and this departure of 20 ships from the total count of Navy ships might dull that attack somewhat.

Could they be planning to repurpose more batches of ships to other PLA forces? Perhaps the Marines or Ground Forces?

I am reminded of the mission patch from a satellite launch the other day which had an LHD on it, which might suggest a new mission for those vessels.

Reading too much I think. PLAN really don't care about what US says about its capacity right now. Most plausible explanation is that CCG needs armed corvette class vessels and PLAN wants to get rid-off the 056s that have insufficient ASW and sub-detection capabilities. No, PLAN Marines are never gonna get their own warships. (They are still subordinate to PLAN and will very likely remain that way) GF don't really need its own LHD tbh, GF only has some transport ships so that every time they ship supplies and rotate personnels off from South China Sea Island Bases, they don't have to use PLAN assets.

That could be an added benefit, to reduce the intensity of a naval arms race, but yeah I don't think that was the intent of the transfer.

Washington's claim that China has the "world's largest navy" has been based on just counting the number of "battle force" ships anyway, and battle force is a term defined by the US Navy. China will still have more ships by this definition after the transfer - just by a smaller margin than before - so the American claim will still hold according to this definition. By all other metrics - tonnage, VLS cells, personnel - the US Navy is still approximately double the size.

The US fudged the numbers so to get more budget, truth is China is still a long way to go.

Fortunately, China do know the truth.
