Are they also builting an indigenous version of the club missile? It shouldn't be much more complicated than a ramjet missile.

I read on sina.com in the military section that the JH-7A is going to start to use Chinese engines.

That's old news by years now. All the JH-7As have to use WS-9 because the supply of Speys were never enough in the first place. They were completely used up in the two JH-7 batches and whatever is left has to be reserved for spares.

Personal Ideal Modification to the JH-7/A:
* Installation of bubble canopy to give both pilots 360 view
* Raise pilots seating to give them a clearier angle view
* Installation of further refined up thrusted WS-9 (100kN from 91kN)
* Spacing the engine further away from each other
* Increase width of the structure while decreasing the length and the height of the aircraft
* Lower RCS
* More composite materials
* Increase range to 3800km

Re: JH-7/JH-7A Thread

bubble canopy? raised seats?? simply put, the JH-7/A does not need such useless up-grades that only serve to drive up the unit price. I highly doubt having 360 degree view would serve its purpose as an anti-shipping platform where the targets are hundreds of kilometers away. If you get in a dog fight in a JH-7/A then im guessing ur only real option would be to afterburn your way out of there as IMO the JH-7/A is not a dog fighting platform.

Also i don't agree more composites should be used. Most composites are used on multi-role / air-superiority fighters where the light materials will increase manouverability and range. On a strike aircraft like JH-7/A, composite material will again, only serve to drive up unit costs. It doesnt need to be manouverable and range can easily be increased by external tanks, although asmittedly it would require some sacrifice in its payload.
composite are impractical on strike aircraft where it needs a high sortie/maintainence ratio. Anyone here seen a crunched peice of composite? I have, on a ferrai f40 when it crashed on a test track. The whole frontal section had to be replaced whereas a bent peice of aluminium can simply be hammered back into place.

Im no expert in the field of aircraft manufacture so the above is only my opinion

Well after all he did say it is his personal opinion and he is welcome to say it.

Although I do agree there is no point to do the "Michael Jackson" facelift on a weapon's platform. Everyone should know everything has its limits, even after mods and such, and there is no point to mutate it well beyond what it is. When the time will come, it is better to retire gracefully and allow another platform to take its place.

basically just saying that JH-7A currently has the most complex multi-hardpoint, multi-weapon and double control system. The new integrated fire control system allow the firing of medium and long ranged anti-ship and ground attack missiles and PGMs It says that JH-7A had a lot of improvements in the training prior to the peace mission 2007 and performed extremely well in the exercise.

I heard the Chinese WS-9 engines have some serious flaws, including its life expectancy is only about half as long as most western produced engines of same class.

Where did you hear that? And what 'Western' engines of that class? The Spey, or 'Western' engines in general?

This isn't a nitpick, it's a serious question. The Spey is an extremely reliable engine, and can go on for 10,000 hours between overhauls. Half that is still decent and acceptable. If it's half of, say, 2000 hours, it's not quite so acceptable.
