You know that Chinese civil war was not only fought in mainland China but also divided oversea Chinese population into pro-CPC and pro-KMT camps? Prior to 1980s, how many oversea Chinese actually accept PRC as their government instead of an illegitimate rebel group? I guess lots of them took KMT in Taiwan as China and expect protection from ROC, rejecting PRC's help was pretty logical for them.

What they did not know is that the later anti-Communist coup by Suharto expanded to be an anti-Chinese killing because lots of Indonesian communists were ethnic Chinese, and natives just wanted to take that advantage. By this time it is too late for help from PRC, while their own legitimate "country" ROC never came to help. Remember ROC accept dual citizenship, any ethnic Chinese in Indonesia who did not pick up PRC offer is legally ROC citizen if they didn't renounce it.
This is complete BS Indonesia only recognize PRC as the sole government of China. There is no Kuomintang office or affiliate org in Indo after independence In fact they are illegal since Kuomintang was helping rebellion in north Sulawesi by providing air support for the rebel. The Indo ban or close any Kuomintang org

ROC provide so call travel visa for overseas Chinese. My relative who was in Canada plan to go back to Indo but his passport is PRC. So he was afraid that he will got problem. So he apply for ROC visa . He got ROC visa but he CANNOT LIVE IN TAIWAN It is only travel visa! I never heard Taiwan offer permanent visa other than scholarship. they still offer it until today My younger relative got one! He is in Taiwan now but NO VISA!

When small children start playing chess they make one common mistake—they forget the other side gets to a make a move. That analogy describes U.S. policy toward China in three areas: trade, semiconductors and immigration. In all three areas, U.S. policies described by supporters as “tough” have backfired.

Oh what the fuck. Did he just call his fellow Americans small children?

Putin - Biden talk, the lesson for China.

Putin demands guarantee that NATO stops eastwards expansion and no deployment of offensive weapons on Russia's border, or else.

Biden says if Russia invades Ukraine, the West will put unbearable economic sanctions on it.

not even threat of response in force! this is US's response to an invasion at NATO's doorsteps.

back to the South China Sea and the Taiwan Strait, the US wants to change its ambiguous policy, it wants to use force explicitly.

lesson for China: act forcefully, and more forcefully in the South China Sea and the Taiwan Strait.

You are literally comparing apples to oranges here.

The sole reason Putin gets to be so gangster in Europe is because America wants to keep its focus on China on Asia. Because while Russia is an annoyance, only China is a true threat to the western world order these days.

Back during the Cold War, when the USSR was comparatively far stronger than Russia is today compared to NATO, what was NATO’s attitude towards Soviet war threats again? In contrast America was tying one hand behind its own back in Vietnam terrified of drawing China formally into the war if it took the fighting too close to the boarder.

Today the roles are reversed. If China started behaving like Russia, there is almost certainly going to be war with the US. That means China needs to be both certain that whatever it is that is at stake is both worth the cost, and that the Chinese military can actually win the fight.
