Is this related to the new 20 Type 054A(++?) currently under sea trial/construction/to be build? Or is the number 20 just a coincidence. I meant, are the new batch of type 054A(++?) taking over the roles and mission currently undertaken by type 056?

Yes, the new batch of 20 054a and 20 more 056a are gonna be filling the blanks.

Wow! Is there any picture of that? So, are they going to refit the rest two 056s, or just to sell them?
If you look at this picture closely. There is already a non-lethal sonic dispersion device panel attached to the left bottom side of the LED screen near the superstructure.

Hang on. Are you saying they are building another 20 Type-056A?

It would be a lot cheaper and quicker to just upgrade the existing Type-056 with an ASW suite
CCG had been also expecting their own batch of 056 designed based patrol ships for some time. (Needless to say their priority is lower than the PLAN) So PLAN directly giving them existing 056 ships saves time for CCG from waiting and additional efforts for shipyard to commence another CCG production order.

Is CCG really that impatient? Because sending these ships to CCG and then building a new batch of 056A to replace them sounds like the same/more effort for less ideal result.

It is much better PLAN to get brand new ASW ships than to modify older ones, meant for other tactical role... Modifications might take more time than building new ones, at the other hand, modifications for CCG are simple and it will goes much faster, so i see this as a win win decision.

The CCG already overwhelms the rest of the region's coast guards combined. It's arguable whether they need any new ships for their constabulary and paramilitary roles

So I don't see any rush for the CCG to receive ships like the Type-056, particularly since the Chinese Navy is still facing a serious ASW threat which could be partly addressed by refitting the existing Type-056 with a VDS and TAS
