Covid response was/is a disaster, so he is basically getting the boot
Not the likely reason. Japan's COVID response wasn't bad compared to America/most European ones and not one politician from there is resigning.

More likely Abe's time is over. He wasn't pro-China but the powers that be have decided that someone more aggressively anti-China is required.

If even the Israelis are starting to wonder if it's worthwhile to hitch their wagons to the declining anglos, is it any wonder why the Five Eyes are so hysterical about losing primacy to China?
Usually politicians in the west would only speak their true thought after they left the office. I'd like to quote what Olmert concluded.

The strategic damage to Israel caused by the delay in completing the construction of the Tel Aviv Light Rail is immeasurably greater than the strategic danger of involving Chinese companies in this huge project.

Israel has its own interest that is far more important than American concerns unjustified in Israel's eyes.

At the end of the day, the US will reach a trade agreement with China that suits its interests, and I’m not at all sure that the economic benefits for Israel that are expected to result from such an agreement will be first and foremost in the minds of the Americans.

US is not going to put Israel's interest in the front. Australia was a great example. A well-done by China.

I am convinced that I know what punishment the Chinese will bestow upon us if we join the excessive demand to exclude China from beneficial involvement in the Israeli economy.

We see examples.

Everybody in the position like Olmert know that "Overall economy strength will translate to supremacy regardless the cooperation being civilian or military". The American's goad is to undermine the Chinese economy strength by all means. "Military, strategic concerns" are just cover story. The Israelis is willing to live in a world where China is the number one. They may feel sorry for US to be number two, but Israel's existence is above anything. Olmert's message is clear, Israel should prepare for the eventual jumping of ship for Israel's survival.

This matter is not unique to Israel, it is a question that every politician in every country has to answer, the sooner the better.

I think although the "Five Eyes" is a convenient catch word, it is a bit misleading to the reality. Among them, New Zealand was far from devoted, its altitude is closer to South Korea, they are both laying the foundation of jumping ship already. Britain is more vocal than deed, after all it has very long history of political experience. The real "die hard" loyalists are Australia, Canada and Japan.
