Someone once said on the internet, that Japan's strategy is to wait and watch for America and China to fight it out, then side with the winner.

That is actually a good strategy.

They still believe in the way of the ninjna.

Publicly, the Japanese politicians make all the right noises.

Otherwise, it is full steam ahead with further Japanese economic integration into East Asia, with China at the center of the action.

The actions of the QUAD said it all. The QUAD and China, we have trade war and tech war, actual hand to hand fights with deaths along the border, and trade war trade abuse situation.

Where is the Japanese contribution to this QUAD struggle?

They make the right noises though.

:)
Times change. The countries that claim that they care about human rights today didn't before the Cold War. Their power came from causing and then exploiting human misery around the world. There's a reason why the US hasn't won a war since WWII. It's no coincidence they had to put up a human rights front during that same time. So why did they take away something that gave them so much? Because if they didn't the world was going to revolt against them and they would lose power and influence. And it's also no coincidence that nukes came into the picture too. Look at how the right is criticizing how Biden handled Afghanistan. The more extreme elements are yearning for pre-Cold War type action meaning killing every man, woman, and child that gets in their way. "Make America Great Again" is about going back to those days... and they'll get nuked. Since they lost that they have to care about human rights in order to get the world on their side. The Japanese Empire exploited what Western colonialism did in Asia. That gave them the advantage not because they were genius military tacticians going up against a formidable foe. It's been several generations since they lost WWII to the US. They've been effectively neutered. Try it today and they'll get nuked. All they do now is ride the US's coattails. The same goes with human rights. The only reason why you would hear Japan mention human rights today is only propaganda to counter China. Do you see them in the forefront of any human rights on anything else? No, because they know they can hide behind the US and let them do all the work. Today I see Japanese nationalists who hide behind the samurai spirit on TV and they all look like a bunch of nerds talking tough.

I don’t know. Some people are comparing them to pre-49 PLA. What do you think?
That is not equal to being a Taliban loving fanboy.

Examples, Russia/USSR and China practice goose-step like Prussia/Deutsche Rich(Weimar and Nazi), that does not make them loving one another. China during the Qing Dynasty modeled closely to Japan's reform and industrialization when China was at war with Japan, even the uniform of the new army of Qing closely resembles Japan, that does not mean Chinese loved Japan. Comparing Taliban and PLA was (from my observation) only limited to the methodology and tactic level, even the similarity of both having a strong albeit vastly different ideology is a fact, I did not see anybody making that comparison actually said that they love the extreme version of Islam of Taliban 1.0.

Honestly, all of this talk about the way America withdrew from Afghanistan for the greater cause of focusing on China is pure copium of the highest order. First of all, if America is so mighty, we can't do it both? Secondly, the resources gained pulling from Afghanistan aren't enough to make noticeable impact. The way America withdrew has called into question their competence as a great power. Despite what the government is acting like. They have been pretty been in boxed in at the airport. It is the only place in the country that they control. Which means they can't go to Americans or other westerners stranded to help them without entering into a shooting contest with Taliban. Now they're at the total mercy of the Taliban to get their people back. It is a total embarrassing ordeal.

1. Yup, that is excuses and excuses.

2. Chairman Mao would have stormed the airport.

That is one reason why I think the Taliban has changed. The old Taliban would have done that by now, with a few executions thrown in.

Now this new Taliban is all about messaging.

It does make a pretty big dent in the budget though. 2 trillion dollars over 20 years average to about 100 billion dollars, or 1/7th of the US military budget, every year. Biden’s infrastructure bill is around 2 trillion dollars.

Seems an important development. Japan will be having a "2+2" format security dialogue with Taiwan

Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party is planning to hold its first-ever security dialogue with its Taiwanese counterpart, in a move welcomed by the foreign ministry in Taipei but expected to rile Beijing amid rising tensions in the Taiwan Strait. The planned talks with Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party – regarded as the ruling party version of the “2+2 ” security dialogue normally convened between governments – will be held online as early as this month, according to The Japan Times.
