The boss speak to the astronaut

Chinese President Xi Jinping visited the Beijing Aerospace Control Center on Wednesday and talked with three Chinese astronauts, or taikonauts, stationed at China's space station core module Tianhe. The trio - Nie Haisheng, Liu Boming, and Tang Hongbo - embarked on their three-month mission aboard the Shenzhou-12 spacecraft on June 17.

NASA is a political organization part of whose cliental is the scientific community. Much of the scientific community is all for international collaboration, they actually greet Chinese success in space exploration with favor and see these as opportunities to speed the advance of real science. The voice of the scientific community in the west tend to be rather freer from the dictates of the political conflicts. So there is no doubt regardless of the political atmosphere, voices will be heard from the west calling for scientific collaboration with China including in the field of space exploration.

But ultimately the influence of independent scientific community over national policy have been waning in the west since the late 1970s. The rise of climate change denial as backbone of political thought, the election of trump are all but late stage indicators. The ability of scientific community to pull off policy changes will be slight.
