I guess you could say that China is trying to play up its image as a benevolent force as a bit of a way to buy enough time and also to distract the USA from the very real strength that China has right now. Considering all the projects and deals that China is running in on the side, I would say that with the USA dollar tanking and all the hacks and disasters happening in the USA right now, I would think that China is and and is succeeding in giving the impression to the world that China is not strong enough to confront the west in battle. This loveable image of China is a ruse and it is one that most people fall for since most of the USA are too busy dealing with other issues then uniting against China along with most of the world not even considering a United front against China (heck Africa and South America at large is staying right out of it, while Europe is too busy with its own internal issues to focus on actually getting ready for a real fight, as see in its exchanges with Russia). And also to consider the amount of time being wasted in the whole Middle East, Russia and all other issues that is bogging the government down right now (the spy problem is the most recent), at this point, I reckon it would be in China’s best interest in letting the dramas play out in the USA and only show is truly terrifying and ruthless side when the nation has weakened itself enough and when the world still focussed on the USA. Right now, Japan as a nation has no resemblance to the nation it was during WW2 while China still has those memories relatively fresh and is getting more and more advanced. When China is ready and the enemy is weak enough, it will be too late and I believe that both Taiwan and Japan will be the first to feel China’s wrath given that neither nation has really dealt with covid like China has (a tall tale sign that these nations has weak leadership)Beijing thinks like the Democrats. Both see some romanticized outcome that all will see their way and it never turns out that way. I don't how much of this is true but recently the Western media was mocking how Xi wants to portray a more "lovable" image of China. If true, that's a joke. Western culture does at all see Chinese as being lovable. The Democrats always have some storybook ending to everything they want to do and Republicans only see them as child molesters. There's a disconnect with reality there.
also something to note is that the covid is striking all of China’s enemies with a great deal of pain so in a sense I can understand why the west want use China as a scape goat but this however shows the true weakness of a nation and will benefit China in the long run whether they like it or not. In a sense, ‘hide ones strength and bides ones time’ is still at play, only slightly less so in that China is still willing to trying to present a nice image but now is showing hints on what they can really do. And this is something that scares the USA to no end since while the USA loves to come up with assessments on China’s capabilities, they (due to losing most of their CIA assets in China) can never get a full picture of China actual might.
