Your supposition is wrong. It is based on a misinterpretation and has only gained popular acceptance because most people don't read beyond headlines, and are perfectly okay with being lied to even when the consequences can lead to a hot war.

I love how Americans think. If China had nothing to hide why wouldn't they allow Westerners in to investigate? Because Westerners will lie if they don't like the answer. Look at Qanon conspiracists. You think they would settle anything for less than China intentionally did it. Not allowing them into China prevents them from claiming they know because they were there. It's like Americans who claim they're an expert on China because they took a class at school in the US or they went on vacation there simply or because they had a girlfriend who's Chinese. By that logic I can claim to be the expert on Americans because I was born in the US. You think they would accept that?

Consider also that at the beginning of the pandemic, certain western countries like the U.K. and Sweden had already resigned themselves to the fate that only herd immunity could save them from an even more worst outcome.
The fact is China is the first country in the history of humankind that has managed to stop a major pandemic on its track within its border by literally tracking down to the last virus in its huge population.
Even the Chief of WHO expressed his surprise and admiration for China for proving to the world that such a seemingly impossible feat could be done.
Research labs don't underestimate how infectious diseases are, they do the opposite. The Chinese government was slow to act on the seafood market outbreak (though not as slow as western countries), but the idea that they did this knowing there was a lab leak at the same time is absurd.
The symptoms of COVID-19 aren't different to other coronavirus strains, and they would have an idea of potential virulence.
Virus outbreaks are nothing new and do tend to occur every 20-30 years. Who do you think created the Spanish flu?

Hospitals in Japan's second largest city of Osaka are buckling under a huge wave of new coronavirus infections, running out of beds and ventilators as exhausted doctors warn of a "system collapse", and advise against holding the Olympics this summer.
Japan's western region home to 9 million people is suffering the brunt of the fourth wave of the pandemic, accounting for a third of the nation's death toll in May, although it constitutes just 7% of its population.
The speed at which Osaka's healthcare system was overwhelmed underscores the challenges of hosting a major global sports event in two months' time, particularly as only about half of Japan's medical staff have completed inoculations.
"Simply put, this is a collapse of the medical system," said Yuji Tohda, the director of Kindai University Hospital in Osaka.
"The highly infectious British variant and slipping alertness have led to this explosive growth in the number of patients."
Japan has avoided the large infections suffered by other nations, but the fourth pandemic wave took Osaka prefecture by storm, with 3,849 new positive tests in the week to Thursday.

Exactly, the better analogy is that Taiwan has a shack in the middle of someone else’s estate and no access rights. Their house is starting to catch fire and their neighbour who owns the estate is offering them water to put it out; but Taiwan is spitting on that offer and instead begging someone all the way across town for their water, when their house is a raging inferno.
And Taiwan has the gall to blame China for their growing house fire because China wouldn’t grant access rights to allow other people onto its property to reach Taiwan’s burning shack, when said someone has zero spare capacity or intentions to come and help Taiwan in any meaningful way and only wants to send thoughts and prayers if they can be bothered to even think about Taiwan at all.
