Sec.Teddy "Boy" Locsin has been a surprise revelation to me in all honesty. I have known of this man as a political commentator, journalist for the biggest public broadcasting corporation (ABS-CBN) of his country before he took the post as Foreing Affairs Sec. The man seems to be always short on fuse and is very emotional and doesn't seem at all disciplined when it comes to tempering his penchant for colorful outburst along with his sometimes asinine opinions on matters he has absolutely no clue about.
@Bellum_Romanum bro Locsin is a known nationalist, he need to say that publicly as a way to assuage public concern , that is his job as foreign secretary and your right he had a short fuse and he speak his mind, he and Duterte had the same frame of thinking and character. He is once an Amboy (American boy) having live there during Marcos Martial law years as an exile. What change him? having serve as Press secretary during the Cory Aquino term, he had seen how the American operates, the hidden hand as we called and also the nepotism the return of the old oligarch. Bro Locsin is playing for the crowd, it's a bad cop good cop routine and using the same Wokeness strategy the opposition are making, election is near and the topic of the SCS is a way for the opposition to be relevant, like I told you before the American will intervene BIG TIME, and you can see those people making noises are the same former official of the discredit Nonoy Aquino administration. They were embolden by Biden administration and funds are pouring in.

The opposition see the SCS issue as a way to damage Duterte popularity, His independent foreign policy is one of his campaign promises and will be his lasting legacy, people see the benefit it provide and that scare the heck out of Washington and its local counterpart here in the Philippines. And I think the opposition are making a big mistake they will lose the Presidential election, instead of entertaining and pursuing nation building as their platform, they follow the US diktat and wokeness, Duterte name is not in the ballot, he is not allow to run again, the more you gaslight him, the more popular he got , he had accomplish so much within 4 years of his administration that people here see real changes compare to his predecessors.

And Bro you noticed how ABS CBN handle this report, they are pushing an agenda, they want the next president or elected officials to be beholden to them and renew their onerous franchised which Duterte revoke, being embarrass publicly for their nefarious activity and exposed their biased reporting their viewership shrunk tremendously, they're not the king maker anymore thus lessen their power to influence politician.

Thank you for your more in-depth analysis and for giving us a more nuanced background of Sec. Locsin. I understand somewhat where he's coming from but I do follow the man's Twitter and I must say the person can go off the rails at times and doesn't have a good handle on his temper. Duterte on the other hand, is a much more disciplined individual and his use of vulgar or profane words make an impact rather than simply expressing frustrations for shock value.

Do you have any rudimentary knowledge of the Philippine military and it's capabilities by any chance? Since if am not mistaken you served with the U.S. military according to your posts history. America being the perpetual colonial Master of the Philippines I am of the assumption that some U.S. military personnel have some cursory knowledge or awareness of the Philippines being that the country is one of the treaty countries the U.S. is obligated to defend.
@Bellum_Romanum Bro let me try and hope @Norinco_81 can back me up, regarding treaties, the MDT obligates the US to help us IF the Philippine MAIN ISLAND is attack (SCS is not part of that) with the concurrence of the US senate. While we are obligated on our part to support any American military adventurism abroad either by sending support troops or using our territories for resupply.

Regarding military capability, we were under equipment before Duterte assume office, our equipment were mostly hand me down from American military surplus and package it as military aid thru the FMS program. These US military program and training is a way for the American to tie our country policy to theirs, by intentionally making the Philippine military weak it will allow the US to used our bases to protect us without the cost of maintaining and paying for the facilities. In other words our military is equip for domestic policing, law and order without any offshore capability until 2018 when Duterte AFP modernization kicks in.

Duterte independent foreign policy is a way to diversify our military procurement policy, by buying arms from various sources instead of relying on the US, not only we bought brand new equipment but far better capabilities as well and cheaper to with favorable terms of payment. By revoking the VFA, the American acknowledge its short coming and it forces the American to up its game and provide the same modern equipment instead of hand me down.

@Bellum_Romanum bro Duterte is the President any word he spur out will become his official policy, so he is very careful how to frame his statement, while Locsin channel his statement thru twitter which is his private view not as a cabinet member since he is the executor of Duterte policy. And @Temstar is right they telegraph their messages to their intended audiences and as an observer who do you believed had the bigger impact?

Thanks for this response, as my main area of expertise would be the ME and Afghanistan. I do recall a guy that were part of US advisory teams with AFP forces against MILF and other Islamic separatist groups in Mindanao. He didn't mention much detail since they "officially" weren't there.
