From my observations, there's this "he's one of the good ones" phenomenon for example like how Southerner Whites may regard certain black acquaintances as "one of the good ones"
sigh I know this is off topic, but you really need to know something, and this is very relevant for China's affairs. Singaporeans complain about almost everything. Of all the people in the world, the group Singaporean Chinese complain most about are Singaporean Chinese. There is no need to write off the country based on some complaints. Is the race relations in Singapore relatable to the Southern US? Definitely not. The biggest racial conflict to emerge in a decade is a showbiz person who tried to represent racial diversity (not ridicule) by cross dressing in four ethnic outfits and using brown makeup (remember that whiteface with a blonde wig was very common in traditional Chinese plays, this is not America)
There is race tension in Singapore, mainly between the Chinese and Malays. This is an extension of the suppression of Chinese in malaysia and in Indonesia. Is there racism? Yes. Is it overt? No.
There are a lot of Singaporean Chinese just like you who are very riled up about minority rights and 'Chinese privilege', they are trying very hard to wipe out the last few traditional Chinese schools, which were built by the Chinese community despite British suppression. They call these "racial segregation". Every last one of these people are extremely pro-Western 白左. Since Chinese culture has no greater importance than other cultures, their logic goes, Singapore should not be any closer to China than to India, US, Japan, or Australia.
I think you might have forgotten what is it like to be a Chinese majority. I heard that in the Autonomous Regions our compatriots are very unhappy about the ethnic quotas on university admission and the lenient law enforcement on minorities.
