Damn, I just deleted my post after convincing myself that the photo is of an older Y-20 with D-30s.

I think the ratios of the engine width to fuselage means it shouldn't be D-30s.

There's a chance someone doctored a photo, but I don't see any distinguishing traits of it and the way it's presented is not inconsistent with what we'd expect it to look like.

I'd say it's probably it.

Kinda unorthodox for them to test a prototype with four such engines, isn't it? Then again we have sat photos of Y-20s with WS-20s, so maybe this isn't entirely unprecedented.

They've been flying a single engine on the Il-76 testbed many years now, and it seems like their testing regime of the engines now is meant to much more thorough, to the extent that if an engine is seen on the intended platform, it should basically be complete and mature.

Fair enough, although everyone here is eagerly waiting for frontal shots. Next step is to see whether or not a retrofit program for existing Y-20s will take place.
