J-10 Thread IV

It is joked that PLAAF keep some J-7 around so they can show them off on the Chinese New Years Eve celebration show to subconsciously say "oh we're so poor, please send money so we can afford better planes".

Of course it's not true, given enough time they will all be replaced, but these things take time when we're talking a force the size of PLAAF, it wasn't that long ago that people were seriously discussing that tactical J-8 should use when taking on F-22. At least those days are behind us.

That said, maybe keep a few J-7 around and send them up next time USAF sends in U2 so we can relive the glory days of the cold war 1.0.

How many J-10C are there estimated to be in PLAAF now? Losing one to bird strike is quite a loss. These fighters aren't cheap and they're not being built particularly fast either.

What do you think: just a deployment or a a new permanent J-10-brigade? At least it could explain the missing Batch 4/5 J-10Cs we've seen thru 2019/20 without a new unit confirmed

I have a question, why do you call it Wudangshan? Wudangshan is actually about 60 kilometers west of the airport. The little city near it called Laohekou.

Maybe just in case they need to intercept a rogue regional passenger plane, which J-7 would be capable enough to do. :p

Based on what I’ve seen in a recent CCTV documentary the J-7 units, even “combat” ones, are primarily used to nurture PLAAF pilots for bigger and better things.

A jet trainer. Start with the J-7 and if you do well move up to better birds.

I wonder of type 59 tanks are used for the same purpose. Must feel similar getting assigned to one.

One downside with this approach is that 2nd gen fighters handle differently than 4th gen birds. Even if you fly a J-7E with modern avionics you still have different thrust and aerodynamics. This is why they need more L-15s.

Why is this in J10 thread? If we are going to be off topic, I'll pitch in. J7s are still used as advanced training for a lot of the pilots very much like @no_name said. The thought process is that a J-7 much harder to fly than a J10, or flanker, and that it is good to train the basics of combat flight training. It is also very very cheap to fly compared to other 4+ jets. Think of it like the Navy using a sail boat to teach seamanship.

I think there was a news around mid this year suggested the newest batch of airforce junior pilot was trained in CJ-6, JL-10 then directly J-10, so yeah, don't know how long those J-7 could still be used even as training
