Yes, this is about Big Data, but Byte Dance is still a private company. It will do what it believes best, and it will need to live with the consequences of its choice. The worst thing the Chinese government can do is to intervene to save private companies like Washington does with Wall Street.

My argument is this: Tiktok is inconsequential, ByteDance is inconsequential. If it goes belly up, another company will take its place.

Today's executive order and yesterday's clean network is in part designed to slow the internationalization of the Yuan. This is the biggest threat to US. If China rolls out DCEP and foreign merchants can use Chinese fintech platforms, I.e., alipay and wechat pay, to conduct cross-border exchanges then the USD and by extension the US empire is doomed. The timing of these announcements are partly due to trump's reelection and partly because the US is starting to feel the heat, given the recent announcement regarding ant financial IPO and DCEP testings.

Can WeChat be used on Apple devices after the dateline?
No. It will be illegal to continue using it, so Apple will be forced to remove it from your iphone

Even my boomer dad become furious this morning, keep ranting on how this is another unequal treaty from Century of Humiliation. US seems to be awakening the Chinese around the world.

@BMEWS Been out few last few days, can you gimme a summary of what’s going on?

People are using “But China does it as an excuse” but we really aren’t doing it. They want a race to the bottom with China. When in reality they’re alone in that race.

By this logic does it mean they will fix up camps and genocide us? They have an imaginary version of China and they’re trying to become it.

Trump admin has been the biggest boon for the Communist Party. Everything that the CCP has been saying to its people for all these years, that most educated and pro-western elites refused to believe, now they are starting to believe. Many Chinese elites truly believed democracy is the best government for everyone and western culture/thought/political theories in general were truly what China should copy if they want to get developed. Many Chinese elites and intellectuals believed a rich and strong China will be accepted by the west as long as they followed the "global" rules. They believed the great fire wall was bad for China's growth, allowing SOE to exist and preventing western domination of Chinese market by making ownership rules was holding China back.

Guess what, now every single policy made by CCP is being vindicated, even Tiananmen crackdown.

China was deeply divided internally by people who believed China should be independent, self-reliant and self-confident in its path vs the educated liberal elites who were pro-western pro-liberalize everything crowd. Now the liberals are changing their views or completely silent. The political alignment is firmly shifting towards "be confident and follow the Chinese way" crowd.

I think deep inside China there was a lot of expectation in the public who also believed in the "once we get rich we will go for western-democracy" mantra. But even they are starting to realize the west will never accept China no matter how humble, restrained, friendly China is. Plus they no longer see the Chinese political system as incompetent. This will have profound impact by making CCP more powerful and much easier to break vested interests when it comes to passing tough policies. China will not become a western-style democracy until the western order is broken and China come out on top, or China totally loses the new cold war and becomes poor and stagnant and divided once again. The engagement era is truly over for both sides.

But let’s say Biden wins and reverses the anti-China policies.

Will this give Chinese renewed hope in Western democracy?

Would it be better for Trump to win again to show that Americans are out to destroy Chinese?

That is it’s a weak strawman. China never banned the likes of Google, google pulled out because they didn’t want to follow Chinese laws inside China.

China isn’t fight back very hard against this because I think Beijing wants Trump to make the ban, and then to extend it and impose it on the rest of the world by forcing Android and Apple to remove those apps from their stores.

While that will absolutely do some short term damage to the Chinese tech companies involved, it will absolutely destroy the reputation of American tech companies and shatter its stranglehold on the world app stores.

Developing an alternative App Store has never hard or an issue, the issue was getting users and developers world wide to jump ship onto it.

America banning popular apps will shift public opinion, while America imposing its choices on the world will shift government policy in places like the EU who have the collective strength to stand up against America.

Like almost all Trump policies, this will produce minimum short term gratification for maximum medium to long term damage.

At best Trump is to America what fast food is to the American individual, but more realistically, he is like meth or crack cocaine. You get a short term high and delirium at the cost of your long term health and well being, and worse, it warps your sense of reality and is highly addictive.
