Genome sequencing company BGI Group, which was one of the first Chinese firms to develop a test kit after being granted approval to do so by Beijing in late January, said its RT-PCR product became commercially available in the
United States on Wednesday.

It had also been granted a CE certification mark to sell the product within the European Economic Area, the company said.

Greetings everyone.

China has sent millions of medical grade masks and thousands of ventilators and other vital medical equipment to Iran so far. Thank you, friends.

China has also sent a huge amount of such aid to Italy, whilst the EU has abandoned them.

I have a question for my Chinese friends here - how do you feel about the terminology of the virus? My Chinese friends call it the 'Wuhan virus', but as you know there is a bit of an issue with the US calling it the 'China/Chinese virus', so I wanted to get some direct Chinese thoughts on this.

I think that the virus does not have a nationality and associating it with China can be harmful of the many Asians in the US. But we have seen in history how stupid these labels can be - like the "Spanish" flu :)

I hope everyone is keeping well and staying safe.

All the best.

Call it COVID 19.

I'm not a very sensitive person and I don't find offense in simply calling it Wuhan Coronavirus, WuFlu etc... and I couldn't help but laugh at Kung Flu. Obviously, if one wants to sound intelligent, COVID-19 is the scientifically proper name to use. But colloquially, if some China/Wuhan-infused name is used simply to denote the etiology, to me, it's not a problem, but it is obviously a problem when people call it that to lay fault on China for a natural disaster.

Attempts to blame China (start international investigation, have China pay for damages and other ridiculous ideas) come only from politicians with anti-China agendas and ignorant uneducated people. I've never heard of a doctor or scientist of any political leaning attempt to blame a country for the origin of this, or any other virus because they know how stupid it is. And while some people say that it wasn't the virus but the initial reaction that was to blame, well, they should look at the attitude of their own leaders towards COVID-19 before it became a pandemic or before it became obvious that their country would be heavily affected by it.

The more this saga goes on, the more it becomes obvious to me how unique COVID-19 is and how much of a challenge it poses to traditional public health dogma. Many countries, even after seeing the situation in Wuhan, still dismissed that it could repeat it in their country. My PhD training in biological and biomedical sciences was done in the US and I simply said it could NOT become a pandemic after the Wuhan lockdown. Actually, when China locked down Wuhan, at first, I embarrassingly thought it was an overreaction. Now I'm just amazed how they acted so decisively and glad that the CCP has advisers better-trained and wiser than I am. Every step of the way, this virus led people all around the world to believe that the next step could not happen... until it happened. Any attempts to blame China, for any reason whether it be by subliminal naming or direct accusations, is doomed to end in humiliation.

Czech Republic sends face masks to Italy after China shipment 'stolen'

As world leaders call for solidarity in fighting the coronavirus, a shipment of hundreds of thousands of face masks from China to Italy was allegedly confiscated in the Czech Republic and then stolen, according to Italian media.

The news comes as Italy reports consecutive record single-day death tolls from the coronavirus, far surpassing the total fatalities in China, where the outbreak began in December.

The initial report of the stolen masks was carried by Italian state radio Giornale Rai 1 (GR1), and confirmed by the daily La Repubblica.

According to the daily, 680,000 masks were taken last week by the government, which then denied the incident. But GR1 spoke to Czech researcher Lukas Lev Cervinka, who backed the story.

“The original official version said that it dealt with the masks and respirators that were confiscated…and that these were stolen from Czech companies by criminals who could sell them at a higher cost on the international market,” he told the radio station.

Cervinka, along with a Czech NGO, filmed a police truck filled with boxes covered in writing in Chinese and Italian, indicating the masks were a gift to help the Italian people.

He said that the Czech health ministry had been contacted, but they had stuck to their original story until the truth came out in the media.

According to Cervinka, government officials took three days to respond before saying they were in contact with Beijing and Rome to get to the bottom of the matter.

Prague is sending masks and respirators to Italy in an effort to deal with the situation, said Cervinka.

“This is not a gesture of European solidarity at all. It's very shameful,” he added.

Theoretically you can sue the Chinese government for neglect in the early stages of the outbreak in Wuhan. But then again that will open the door for almost every government in the world to be sued.

The outbreak occurred in the winter flu season, in a city with relatively heavy air pollution, despite China's efforts to reduce pollution in recent years, plus all those smokers, hospitals in Wuhan were probably already full of patients with respiratory problems. I think it was a miracle that the COVID-19 was discovered within a month. The Chinese did their best.

On Mar. 22, excluding Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan, there are 39 new cases and 9 deaths (table 1). All 39 deaths were imported from overseas. All 9 deaths occurred in Wuhan, Hubei. Again, there is no new confirmed cases, no new suspected cases in Hubei (table 2).

So far, there have been 353 imported cases. For those who are interested, here is a foreigner's experience in traveling to Beijing:

The increase in Hong Kong is fairly concerning. I hope the Shenzhen government will take the appropriate measures to staunch imported cases from Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan since there is no 14 days quarantine period for people from those areas.
