Coronavirus 2019-2020 thread (no unsubstantiated rumours!)

Jura, I do not agree with your opinion most of the time. But you have my appreciation and respect in this particular effort and willingness to refine the model with valid suggestions. Please keep it up.

While the western MSM focus so much on the fatality number, it is the trending of the confirmed cases that tells us where the fight against 2019-nCoV is working or not.
I respond on the assumption you're not a troll:
it's important to be able to predict the extent of an epidemic from the spread rate, and I wished I knew how to do it

Life is like box of chocolate!

I think that's a classic example of different strokes, and the diversity of life! We should embrace we are all different.

As for my wife and I. We are the opposite, we love explore different cultures. Love different experiences. For example, when we were young. We went over to the Soviet bloc countries because we wanted to see first hand are these people living in a 1984 type Orwellian society. But everyone around this time all goes to Spain for sea and booze. I think our lives are richer and my thinking are more diverse because of it.

Ypu must have seen a lot of war memorials then.
My dad you visit the Soviet bloc a lot for holidays.
He remembers staying in the only Western style 4/5 star hotel in East Berlin where the front desk girls were absolutely beautiful.
Not so much now though.

Well, I guess I'm one of those self and lazy people...

My wife and I love cruises. We go on cruises all the time despite we are in our mid-40's. We took our first cruise about 18 years ago with family and fell in love with it. We usually get a cabin with a balcony. I have to admit that we are lazy. With a cruise ship, you have a hotel and a restaurant traveling together with you. To us, that's very convenient. And yes, that's because we are lazy. AND also cheap! For a relatively reasonable price, we get decent food and board.

I'm not so sure about the "selfish" part though... Cooking food, finding accommodation and entertainment ourselves seem to be the things we have been doing everyday at home... On a cruise, for about 5-7 days, we would like to forget about all these things and just get pampered and enjoy ourselves. I would like my vacation to be stress-free so that we can relax, enjoy what we cannot at home and do something different for once. It sounds like a good deal to us, at least.

I have to admit that we are not as cultured as some others. My wife and I seem to care less about experiencing different cultures and education. Let's face it, both of us have spent 2/3 of our lives getting formal education and continuously getting additional education of all sorts everyday at work and at home. We can skip some of that for a week out of 4-5 years (yes, that's how often we take vacation. Pathetic? Yes...). We seem to care more about de-stressing, maybe because we have been under so much stress and pressure at work... It seems that, nowadays, our dream day would be a whole day of doing nothing at all. A cruise trip lets us do just that... Going to bed whenever we want, waking up whenever we want, eat whenever and whatever we want, taking a nap whenever we want, AND doing nothing else. It seems to be a luxury for us nowadays...

I reckon yopu will still be doing that when you're 80
In NZ , average rest homes for the elderly can cost 50 to 60k yearly.
For that, you get to go unchanged for hours on end should you soil yourself. Crap food, little medical attention and you might have a bed with a leaky roof with rain water dripping on you in storm like conditions.
For the same money you can just about cruise around the Pacific all year round.

My wife and I actually talked about it a while back... Yeah, I know. We are boring people... It may actually be an awesome idea. We don't have any kids. So we can just cruise around the world when we are old... One thing I'm worried about is actually the TV. I'm a huge videophile and am obsessed with big TVs (I have an 82-inch and a 65-inch at home). The TVs on the cruise are kinda pathetic... Let's hope they all change to humongous TVs by the time we get old, like in 40 years...

Exactly! In my family, I'm the odd one out. Both my parents and my older sister and her husband enjoy experiencing different cultures and new things. My parents, in their late 70's and early 80's, spend more than 3 months abroad each year. Every time before their month-long trips, they would spend a few months studying the different cultures that they will be visiting, and learning their histories and foods and stuff. My mom actually takes careful notes of all the historical sites that they want to visit and all the big events that have happened there. So every time on their trip, they would send us photos. And below each pic, they add explanation of what has happened here 200, 500, 1000 years ago... Europe is their favorite place. A few years back, they spend 3 weeks in London, visiting different museums, literally documenting the history of UK (I guess)... Yeah, I know. they are big nerds... Especially, my dad is a huge history nerd. I'm still puzzled why he chose chemistry as his major, but not history or philosophy... Compared to them, I am very boring.

Yes, a few. When i got time I'll dig my photos out. (they are all pre digital). In Yugoslavia, almost every town had one. But the most impressive one is actually in the "west"! It is in west Berlin near the parliament. Its big and had all yhe names of the fallen Soviet troups that took Berlin. It even have the infamous T34 tanks.

I thought what a great place for a memorial. The Soviets know no one will dare or even wanted to remove this memorial right next to the parliament.

Sorry guys. I did not mean to be the one to get several of you off topic. Just trying to say why so many people tested positive for Covid-19 (new official name for 2019-nCov) on the Diamond Princess quarantined in Japan.

Again, my apology.
