seems most of u guys puzzled about that type 001A or type 002?

well actually In official words.there's never having such a type 001A.In the past years when chinese netizens doesn't know the exact name of that carrier. They invent the type name themselves.because of She is surely improved from the PLAN Liaoning who's type number is type 001.And according to PLA's habit, the new carrier improved from Type 001 will most likely named Type 001A.

But, the habit is not absolut.for example.the J-15 fighter now,was improved from J-11,and It's very first name is J-11C.

But when the new carrier was launched.the pictures shows that “002航母工程 balabalabala”.And the 002航母工程 means project 002 aircraft carrier. That is vey similar to Type 002 aircraft carrier in Chinese context. As the J-10's project name is 十号工程(project No.10).Seeing this.the Chinese netizens changed thier calling to the new carrier to type 002.and for now,it becomes a common sense for Chinese military fans.

We all - except @Jeff Head - know that this is the 003-Thread and call the 3rd carrier "003".

I wrote a piece on this detailing the situation a while ago.

However SDF remains one of the last forums/communities where this confusion in the thread title still exists.

But most of us understand what the actual up to date names are, it's just that the thread titles aren't changed yet because one of the senior moderators insists on the previous titles.

GE updated JNCX, with imagery from 10th March.

We are finally able to measure the beam of 003 directly rather than having to measure a secondary object to extrapolate its beam.

I consistently measure between 40-41 meters on GE, which is similar to what the CSIS satellite imagery earlier this year measured.

So the beam is similar to those of the USS Enterprise and USS Nimitz then. 40 meters would be like the USS John F. Kennedy, but 41 meters would a beam similar to those of the CVNs.

I deleted a number of posts above that were unnecessarily political and potentially inflammatory in nature.

"Why is XYZ being so threatening" or "why does XYZ need this particular ship/weapon/aircraft" type posts lead to discussions which are inflammatory and low effort more often than not.
Try to be constructive please.

Apparently Rear Admiral Zhang Xu Dong at an appearance at Zhejiang institute of technology stated that the carrier being built at Shanghai would displace 78,000 tons and have conventional propulsion and electromagnetic catapults.

Zhang Xu Dong was formerly a captain of the 052C DDG 170.
So, all things that we've known about roughly for a while now, but this is just another bit of a tidbit to add further weight to that consensus.

If he did state this then I would believe that the information he is giving is accurate and a reflection of the state of affairs, and not merely a "recycling" of the same rumours we have had for a while now (namely the displacement) if the rumours were inaccurate, however the possibility of the latter cannot fully be excluded.

But at present the consensus continues to be that 003 will be a conventionally powered carrier with EM cats and a displacement of around 80,000 tons (depending on whether the 78,000 tons is normal or full).
