lay the foundation for China to require or pressure the transfer of technology
Um, beg your pardon but those companies willfully accepted such terms .
Nand conditionsow to be more precise these companies formed joint ventures and made massive profits, but they didn't expect Chinese partners/contractors to improve so much. There is a saying, caveat emptor.
Now if the USA thinks that Chinese somehow forcefully (at gunpoint?) stole the tech then why didn't she lodged a complaint at the WTO? Please note that by complaint I mean a proper one with stated allegation and if possible anecdotes and evidence. AFAIK hitherto the US complaints had such vague terms as forced tech transfer.

Lastly, if the grievance is genuine then they should leave China immediately since they know that they have been robbed since they started those JVs.

The thing is all the companies in the rest of the world form JV or buying over compnaies (and hence the transfer of technology) all the time. If they are free to do so, why can't Chinese companies?

I didn't mean Mahathir; that's just 1 person. I meant the restaurant reaction. That indicates that it's a popular and fervent sentiment in order for restaurants to use it to gain customer support. If such a trend of supporting Huawei against the US is controversial in Malaysia, businesses would not want to endorse it since they'd be losing customers as much as gaining customers while also dishing out on a discount. If the sentiment were meek, there would be no point using it since it would not elicit a reaction strong enough to gain business. Trends like this really only happen when a large majority of people are in strong support of it so the businesses are confident that they will gain much more than they lose, even with the discounted prices.

Its more than one person --- why do you think Mahathir was popular in the first place?

From India to Indonesia, South to Southeast Asia has had brutal history with European colonialism, which in modern times has grown into its own nationalism, and maybe even towards a sense of Pan Asian nationalism. The region likes to see strong leaders that can cooperate internationally but also say No to the West and call them out for double standards. Mahathir himself in his earlier years was the archetype of such Asian leaders, known for things like "Look East Policy" and "Buy British Last". He also advocated for Asian development models over Western ones and has been critical of the West. Note that Mahathir recently stopped an BRI project and placed that under renegotiation. However that does not make him Anti-China, only Malaysia First.

Huawei said no and stood up, an Eastern entity against Western powers, and that is going to resonate strongly with Asians, even if they are not Pro-China, something that does not make them Pro-West either.

Perhaps of the Temporary License? But if that's the case they shouldn't have removed Huawei in the first place -- unless they didn't know there's a temporary license.

Perhaps it was unnecessary to remove in the first place? That it's an overreaction?

Perhaps it was all part of a propaganda war, to create the feeling that Huawei is being isolated? Now that that's over and no media's reporting it with a follow-on, they just quietly added Huawei back?

Who knows? and it doesn't matter to be honest. If Huawei can't get around the Google and ARM ban none of these will make a difference. If Huawei can get around those bigger issues these smaller ones will just go away as well, as if they never existed in the first place.

I think there were people in the organizations who had intention to damage Huawei's reputation. Now that the job has been done, and knowing that they can't stop Huawei from building their products to any kind of world standard they want, they might just as well reinstate Huawei. They may also be fearful of a lawsuit coming their way.

But by removing Huawei's membeship their own reputation is also damaged.

What's your point? Everybody here understands that America complains that China's "not playing fair." That doesn't make its complaints legitimate and that's also because America wants to be the only country that doesn't play fair. Obviously, China's not going to let that happen.

Isn't it incredible that siting a statement from an arm of the US government as proof that China is not playing "fair". Lol
If China's WTO representative had written a similar piece stating that China is playing fair, etc.

He would be siting things like state control media, everybody is towing the party line. And will reject the statement outright, refused to accept statements from any arms of a Chinese government as PROOF!

So why on earth does he think we should accept the statement from an arm of the US GOVERNMENT as proof of China not playing fair! The mind boggles!

Its comical, anyone with half a brain would walked away from a partner/country thats bullying and robbing you.

These "forced tech transfer" finger pointing from Trump just doesn't past the smell test!
