Is the US shooting itself in the foot by banning Huawei?

Come on now, the current wen DPP admin in Taiwan is openly hostile toward China. It practically allows US do whatever it wants so its entirely up to US. If US wants it to declare independence now it would. The ball is in US Court.

The factories, boarding students and assets on the mainland, HK and Macau are however not. And that makes up the lion's share of the taiwanese elite's and (upper) middle class possessions.

If Tsai rose up in open opposition against the administration, it would only be counterproductive. Taiwan's local govt defies the central admin because it has weapons pointed at population centers. And also because it largely DOESN'T defy the central government. It carries out manufacturing considered too low margin or too poorly regulated for mainland companies, it buys up huge tracts of land in new cities, more than any other province since the rich are looking for a legit place to stash their money, provides students to boost China's STEM output and more.

It is simply more practical to let it be an autonomous area than the potential fallout of a few missiles slipping through and striking high rises in downtown Xiamen, leading to 9/11 levels of casualties. And after arresting every DPP and KMT and installing a new local govt, what would they have gained anyways?

All that changes if taiwan is considered a possible route of invasion, for US no less. Then, the question changes from one of jurisdiction into one of national security.

Edit: answer to your latest reply.

It is suicide because much of their assets (and even their kids, or themselves) are on the mainland where BEIJING, not Taipei or US has jurisdiction. Including the factories.

Again, Taiwan regards US and entire Western market bigger than China.

How can dropping China market be suicide?
Refusing a US order is not losing the whole Western market, or any part of it outside of the US. The Western countries themselves don't even accept American requests to ban Huawei. They wouldn't even have a reaction to the ROC refusing a US request to voluntarily kill of one of their own top industries. China is a larger market and more important economic entity for Taiwan's development than the US. For Taiwan's semiconductors to lose the Chinese market, which, once again, is larger than the rest of the world combined, would mean huge losses causing them to lay people off like they're mowing the lawn. Where do these skilled people go when they are laid off? China.

I'm not sure what the current government in ROC would do. Tsai may actually be stupid enough to let Washington push Taiwan's industries in front of a bus for Washington's sake, but she may also be stopped since her approval rating is excruciatingly low. I heard that a very popular man hoping to win the leadership in Taiwan had once punched Chen Shuibian in the face, sending him to the hospital. So... everything is uncertain and dynamic as far as I know.

That said, I reiterate that once again, I agree with that China needs to work on its own advanced semiconductors and stealthily advance the MIC2025 plan, which is really more of an ongoing and continuous process rather than one with a deadline.

Taiwanese can dream all they like, that the Western market for chips is bigger than China, but independent observers disagree. According to Deloitte, China

In other words, China's semiconductor market is bigger than anybody else, including all of the West combined.

That is now. The Chinese market for chips is growing much faster than the rest of the world:

. In a few years, China will completely dominate the semiconductor market.

So I say to Taiwanese: dream on. If you lose the mainland Chinese market for chips (by sanctioning Huawei, for instance), you will slowly starve.

Huawei decisions are down to those making them, not the US
  • As the Chinese technology leader announces record profits, the Trump White House continues to exert pressure on other nations not to take its products out of security fears

Huawei’s cutting-edge products and equipment may not be appreciated by the United States, but they have an avid following in many other parts of the world.

The Chinese technology leader yesterday announced record profits and strong overseas growth for last year, placing the firm for the first time beside the likes of Apple and Google’s parent Alphabet in the US$100 billion club.

It is no mean feat given the actions of the White House and American intelligence agencies; bans and criminal charges have been coupled with pressure on countries to keep the firm out of their next-generation 5G networks.

With the financial outlook even more promising, it is obvious that when it comes to telecommunications, governments and customers prefer to put innovation and quality ahead of politics.

The Shenzhen-based company’s annual revenue rose 19.5 per cent to 721.2 billion yuan (US$107.1 billion), with profits up 25 per cent to 59.3 billion yuan. Smartphones and other consumer goods comprised the bulk of earnings, with the carrier business slightly down on last year, although it is forecast to jump as 5G network contracts are signed.

Like its smartphones, Huawei’s 5G equipment is praised for being more advanced, of equal or better quality and cheaper than rivals.

It has already signed contracts accounting for 28 per cent of the global market. Such successes do not sit well with the White House, which has put the company at the centre of its strategy to stall China’s technological rise – to the point that US President Donald Trump has said it may be used as a bargaining chip in trade war negotiations.

On the pretext such equipment is a threat to national security, the US has for months been pressuring allies to follow its lead by imposing bans.

Australia has already joined in as has New Zealand until concerns are allayed, but the two other members of the “Five Eyes” intelligence alliance, Britain and Canada, have yet to make a decision.

Doubts stem from Beijing’s 2017 law that compels companies to help with intelligence gathering if ordered to, but a government-led oversight board in Britain determined this week that security flaws in software, not state interference, are problematic.

US calls for a boycott were also ignored by the European Commission, which instead of imposing a blanket ban, advised its 28 member governments to assess threats in their national markets.

Worries about the security of 5G networks are understandable; while providing ultra-fast speeds, they enable many more devices to be connected with greater precision.

Huawei, like every other company involved, has to ensure data is safe by closing off software and hardware vulnerabilities. Choices and the direction taken should be up to governments and consumers, not the US.

Why does Taiwan do business with China at all if it doesn't need the China market? Why does any of China's neighbors? Despite Asians having the most rabid nationalism in the world, there's one thing that's most important more than their nationalistic pride... their greed. Just follow Western stereotypes of Asians and the only thing Asians think about is money. That's why they need China despite hating China because they want to make money. If their principles and ideals are more important why are they doing business with China now? It's because they aren't as important as making money. That's why China has power none of them ever will have because even the US and the West wants money from China. End relations right now. I dare you!

Remember when President Aquino of the Philippines went all in on the US's side hating on China? He even whined like a neglected puppy that he was worried China would leave the Philippines out of One Belt One Road. Aquino wanted the money. Obama couldn't get any where with his Pivot to Asia because he believed the lies like Taiwan will fight for the US any time Americans wish. No, everyone in Asia is selfish where they'll side with the US but Americans have to do all the dirty work and give them free money. Americans shouldn't get a big head because all these Asians that will side with the US. No it's really Asians know they can manipulate Americans more than China. Obama thought Asians will do all the dirty work and Asians thought the US will do their dirty work. That's why the Pivot to Asia went no where.

Ever hear of there's no honor among thieves? That's because thieves are motivated by selfishness. They only think about themselves so relying on each other is impossible. That's what the US and other Asian countries have in common. They all have the same goal but they all have their own selfish interests that's above them banning together in more than just words. All is not lost for the US but it requires the US to start the war and then you have to be clearly winning it with victory seen ahead and then all of Asia will jump in with their armies so they can take credit for defeating the Chinese. But we don't live in a Trump fantasy world where in a conflict one side suffers everything while the other side suffers nothing. By those standards to declare victory would be near impossible. They want the other guy to do it because they know they're going to suffer great losses... too much for them handle themselves.

Trump now even is getting slammed with reality because the question now is in his trade war against China is what is he willing to lose in order to win. If the US is so mighty, why not end trade with China right now. The US doesn't need China. Yet he's not ending trade.

its greed and its how capitalism works, excess capital and production must be invested in emerging markets to create new markets.

Whats been shown over and over is that those emerging markets then become your competitors.

Britain/Europe first did it through global domination. Then US took the reign and started investing gia Marshall plan. Asian tigers rose and started investing in China.

China is now spreading its capital into Asia and Africa and becoming a peer competitor to the US.

Only thing saving capitalism is emerging markets and the global economic elites will not let Trump destroy the system for sure.

Alternative is war.

Shanghai's 5G network starts test runs

A 5G network in Shanghai's Hongkou District, backed by Chinese telecom giant China Mobile, started trial runs on Saturday.

Wu Qing, Shanghai's vice mayor, made the network's first video call using a Huawei Mate X, a foldable 5G smartphone, at the launch ceremony.

A total of 228 5G base stations have been deployed in Hongkou, making it the first district in Shanghai fully covered by a 5G network and a gigabit broadband network.

Zhang Jianming, deputy director of the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Informatization, said the city aims to build over 10,000 5G base stations by the end of the year, and the number is expected to exceed 30,000 by 2021.

Zhang added that the 5G network would provide solutions to industrial manufacturing, internet-connected cars, healthcare and city management.

Shanghai's latest move adds to a recent trend of Chinese cities adopting the 5G network to meet public demands.

In late January, an airport in south China's Guangdong Province launched a 5G base station. An indoor 5G network will be installed in the Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station by the end of this year.

Test data showed that 5G network is able to provide a peak single-user download speed of 1.6 Gbps, nearly 16 times faster than that of 4G service.

Let's not mistake some members as being overly-zealous pro-Chinese. They taunt China as being weak and usually demand military offensive action of some sort not because China's honor is being insulted. They want China to blindly act aggressively because that's the only way to get the world to gang-up on China. That's the conundrum of anti-China forces in the world because so far they have no good excuses to act militarily against China because they will be the ones that are seen upon the world as the bad guy. Look at them how they don't care who dies just as long it's not them. Is that someone who cares about peace and human rights which those that hate China all hide behind? Egging on the other to do your dirty work is both cowardly and evil.

US does need China's cheap products for daily living but wont allow China own hightech products in its market.

Most US conservatives think China will blink first.
