Any word on the progress of the first Type 055 ? It has been in fitting out for close to a year by now, sea trials should be near.

maybe. it took about a year for the first 052D to go from launch to sea trials.

I wouldn't be surprised if the first 055 took longer than that given it's a much larger and more complex ship not to mention JNCX is arguably juggling more ships to fit out at this time compared to when the lead 052D was fitting out.

wellll, it is the first 055, I'd expect them to have some issues and will take a bit longer, the 2nd and so on will be a lot faster

much better just to take prudently and do it right in the first place .... than sorry ;) .... and China definitely not in hurry

Let's have a look at what happened with the first in class Type-52D.

We saw it launched and fitted out fairly quickly, presumably because it benefitted from being the priority fitout over the other ships in fitout.

So that let them get the first ship into service quickly, and learn crucial lessons for the following ships.

Just FYI, fairly quickly so meant a fitting out time of about one year for the first 052D. It was sea trials for the lead 052D that was shorter. I expect the lead 055 will be similar.

Nice shot of type 55 via LKj86. They should be launched any day now

Dalian flyover... An impressive shipyard and an even more impressive metropolis.

Notice the 055 on the left, the cover over the front side array appears smoother than the temporary covers used during construction. I wonder if the installation is finished on that array.

Are you suggesting that the cover over the front array being smooth means that work on the actual radar array at that location has commenced or even finished?

That would be impossible -- none of the 055s or 052Ds launched so far (nor indeed most naval ships launched in the world) have had their radar arrays in place when they were launched.

Radar arrays are only installed during the fitting out process. During launch, they may sometimes put on covers that make the ship look "complete" but underneath the covers is typically just an empty space, or even mock ups of certain systems. Systems like radars are almost always never actually installed prior to launch.

If what this article say is true, then we can very well see the 6th 055 being launched late this year or early next. If it is the former, then that will mean that China would have launched 4 cruiser sized vessel in the span of just a year. That is already half of the predicted initial batch ordered by the PLAN.
And if JNCX get to work immediately after launching the first and second, all 8 vessels can very well be launched in just 3 years time after the lead ship. With 2 additional slots to spare if the PLAN wishes to add more.
Again, that is some impressive build rate.
