Seeking jobs is not the exclusive domain of graduating students or laid-off workers — it's also an essential activity for people behind bars to reenter society.

On April 10, a job fair for inmates was held in a prison in Shaoguan, Guangdong province. More than 600 job vacancies were offered to 214 prisoners who are about to be released.

For inmates with good skills, their salaries are comparable to average employees.

Born in 1961, Yang Shaoshi set up a literacy class at his home in Wafang village, Jinlan town, Qianxi county, Bijie city in the autumn of 1977, when he was 17 years old. The reason he did so was because seven children in his village could not go to school because a cliff blocked their way.

"When Yang began teaching the seven children, the other villagers all came to Yang's home and listened to his lessons. After the yearly autumn harvest, the seven students' parents paid teacher Yang with 50 kilograms of corn as his salary," said 57-year-old Li Zhiying.

In 1987, the local government built a school so that more children could receive an education. Yang became a teacher at that school.

But Yang discovered that to get to the new school, students had to spend more than one hour climbing the tallest peak of Chuangtou Mountain and traversing Fengzi cliff, which is two kilometers long.

"We live in a remote area, and the way to school is full of risks, so I need to guide them every day," Yang said.

Yang often brings sickles and hoes with him to mend the narrow and uneven mountain roads to ensure the students' safety.
