Yes, my point was that a quantum leap in metamaterial application, if achieved, may well not be publicly acknowledged in detail.

As for assertions of a world first, maybe I'm a jaded cynic, but that invariably arouses my suspicions. If you do some research, it so often turns out that somebody else has been doing it for ages (even when the claim originates in the specialised press rather than mass media) that it's not even funny. I mean, Kinzhal is the world's first air-launched ballistic missile, Gutenberg invented movable type and GE pioneered swept fan blades & 3D compressor aerodynamics*, right?

* A favourite example of mine - poorly known, but extremely impressive. I'd rather not digress, but can certainly elaborate if there is interest.

Tbh whether the CCTV documentary statement of the application of the material being a "world first" is true or false isn't that important in the scheme of things, so much as whether it is actually a product that is being implemented on the aircraft or not.

As for whether it may be acknowledged in detail or not -- I think the documentary was definitely not acknowledging it "in detail". It's definitely not something produced that is intended to convince anyone that may be skeptical of such a claim.

This material was in the news before. Remember stories of the invisibility cloak like Harry Potter which I think was misrepresented by the media. Back then it was just something mentioned in the news. This is a little more extensive.

Aujourd'hui c'est le 2e jour du 2e mois sur le calendrier chinois, la fête "Longtaitou", littéralement "le dragon qui lève ses yeux". Quelques spotteurs chinois en ont profité pour poster....

Today is the 2nd day of the 2nd month on the Chinese calendar, the Feast "Longtaitou", literally "the dragon that lifts his eyes". Some Chinese spotters took the opportunity to post....

Of course, you're a consummate gentlemen,,,,, "when you're asleep",,, LOL, but very nice pictures, the two ship Deino posted is something that I have waited a long time to see, it actually much more indicative that we have moved into a new phase than the pictures of 5 J-20 in a diamond...

The "two ship" is the basic fighting element of the "fighter pilot", and that they are now putting up two ships is "transformational", pun intended..

and that departure picture with the gear in transit,, well to say I love gear in transit pictures is beyond needing to be said.. while I like them all, I love it when the nose gear is about to enter the wheel well, moving up against the slipstream at about a 25 degree angle to the forward fuselage..

No doubt we are all glad to be getting many more formal pictures, but I miss the " Real Life" aspect of the "wall-climbers".

Those are old pictures I think.

One area where the J-20 is almost certain to employ a metamaterial is the radome. As in other 4.5 and 5th generation aircraft, this is highly likely to be a frequency selective surface, allowing radome internal RAM treatments to be relatively simple (in-band only).

Whether metamaterial applications go beyond this relatively conventional scope is probably not going to be released into the public domain.
If I interpret you right, you are saying other (existing) 5th gen aircrafts (F-22 and F-35) are already using (same or other type) frequency selective treatment?

If you mean other type that also include traditional RAM, then I have no doubt of it. However, I'd appreciate that you point me to some article for more details of the technology.

If you mean same (=metamaterial in the CCTV program), please provide something from US venders.

Just to avoid confusion, you probably know that the RAM or other type material are playing with the size of EM particles chemically, while this metamaterial is essentially micro wires and capacitors printed on a flexible film base, it can be seen as a printed board of micro electronics. The two types are totally different species.

As for assertions of a world first, maybe I'm a jaded cynic, but that invariably arouses my suspicions. If you do some research, it so often turns out that somebody else has been doing it for ages (even when the claim originates in the specialised press rather than mass media) that it's not even funny. The full CCTV claim of the first was followed by clear acknowledgement of "US and China are on the same stage being the lead in the area, ahead of Germany, Japan and Netherlands". So it is not like "China claims to be the first without knowing that others are doing the same thing."
