Trump to Seek 24 Boeing Super Hornets in Budget, Reversing Obama...

1000x-1.jpg

"The Navy has argued that it needs more of the planes designated F/A-18E/F to fill a shortage in its inventory until more of Lockheed Martin Corp.’s newer F-35s are deployed. Before Trump even took office, he’d promoted the Super Hornet as a less costly alternative to the F-35, though the two planes have different capabilities."

and here ya go, the reason the Chinese bought those SU-35s, when you need capability NOW, actually yesterday, and your 5 gen is NOT ready for "prime time"! actions have consequences, and those birds will be moving out to the boat as soon as they begin arriving! I do hope they are "Advance Hornets"!

The Navy wants to extend how far the F-18 can fly to counter China’s anti-ship missile advantage..

maxresdefault.jpg

"The US Navy wants to increase the range of its aircraft so carriers can remain out of missile range, an apparent response to China's anti-ship defenses.

The Navy recently announced that it has awarded Boeing a $219,600,000 contract to build and deliver conformal fuel tanks for its air wings workhorse, the F/A-18 Super Hornet, as part of an emphasis on increasing fuel capacity and refueling ability.

CFTs are additional fuel tanks that are attached to the outside of the aircraft, somewhat similar to drop tanks. Unlike drop tanks however, they are attached to the structure of the aircraft instead of the wing, and cannot be dropped."

Lockheed Martin Unveils MQ-25 'Stingray' Tanker Drone Design for the Navy...

refueling-sec-2-2-4-fig2b-jpg-1522094814.jpg

"Lockheed Martin's Advanced Development Programs, better known as Skunk Works, has released concept images of its MQ-25 'Stingray' design, an unmanned carrier-launched tanker plane. The refueling drone will compete against designs from Boeing and General Atomics for a Navy contract to build a fleet of the aircraft.

The Navy's MQ-25 program seeks a refueling drone that can perform catapult-launched takeoffs and arrested landings on aircraft carriers. The tanker should be capable of passing 14,000 lbs. of fuel to other planes at a range of 500 nautical miles from the carrier.

Such a tanker could significantly extend the operating range of carrier-based fighter jets like the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet and F-35C Joint Strike Fighter. A Super Hornet, for example, has a strike range of about 450 nautical miles. The Stingray could extend that range to more than 700 nmi."

and here its rather more obvious that the Lockheed design is tailless and very likely much more stealthy than Boeings bird,, L/O was NOT a requirement, and there may be operational considerations with the stealthy bird?? but in my opinion, if LockMart can meet or beat the requirements, while presenting a much more L/O platform, that's going to give them a tremendous operating advantage....
