Brilliant amphibious assault group but is it ?

3 more to come for ESF

Still shocking that after 10 years of development Type 726 LCAC still not seen fully loaded entering or leaving well deck

Whole point of these is beech landing for equipment yet we have never seen it happen after a decade

In the latest excercise in Nov 2017 with 989 the LCAC was still empty ??

Quiteoff putting Type 071 seem just like symbolic ships not for use

Better believe it 6th unit

Satellite images confirmed it months ago but look at the pace of work

998 launched 12/2006
999 launched 11/2010
989 launched 09/2011

All 3 to SSF

988 launched 01/2015
9xx launched 06/2017
9xx to be launched 2018

All to ESF

2 amphibious ready groups enough for 2 marine expeditionary units

Question is will NSF get such a group

In addition to 4 helos and 4 LCAC I think they could fit 10 IFV in the lower and uppercompartments each that's 20 IFV

Each LCAC can hold 2-3 IFV each, so 4 x 3 = 12 IFV by LCAC

Because they are through door ramp LCAC they could carry 12 IFV while 2 dozen more sit in the front compartment

So that's 3 waves of 4 x LCAC landing 36 (15-20ton) vehicles

Plus 4 x Z8 transport 30 marines each that's 120 marines In a single wave 3 x waves is 360 marines

In a relatively short period a Type 071 can land 360 marines and 36 vehicles

This is more than enough for a beech fighting battalion

Now 3 such LPD could seriously pack a powerful punch

Off course though you still need the air component of a ARG that's where the LHD/LHA comes in with attack helicopters to give top cover

1 x LHD and 3 x LPD depending on the threat a nearby carrier giving fixed wing support

China needs to first establish such a force then practice for years and years as a integrated battle group to refine such a force

Do I understand it correctly that in their exercises up to date the PLAN is disembarking their amphibious vehicles directly from the well deck of the 071 ?

In that case this would be just a big wave of a lot of vehicles hitting the beach "at once".

Could it be that the PLAN actually prefers this way of using the ships ? Perhaps because this is similar to how they use their LSTs and their amphibious vehicles are supposed to be quite fast ?

The big drawbacks from this kind of operation would be that the ship would most likely be closer to the shore and you can only use amphibious vehicles whereas a LCAC should be able to transport an MBT.

But disembarking all the vehicles at once might actually be faster than waiting for the LCACs to do 3 round trips.
