I don’t think it’s entirely bias. You got to appreciate the fact that many of our fellow members are non-native English speakers like you. The chance of misunderstanding each other gets astronomically high when your writing style is so convoluted.
I’m not blaming you for the lack of English writing skill. But at the same time, you also cannot blame others for misunderstanding you. This is a two-way street. Even more, It’s usually the speaker who bears the responsibility for making sure that his message is clear.
I’ve said this many times. As a researcher, writing is a big part of my job, like papers and grant applications. Many times, reviewers misunderstand or completely miss what I write. At the beginning, I used to blame them for not reading it carefully. Sometimes, I would even flat out say these reviewers are simply stupid. It’s such a simple concept that I am trying to convey. How can they miss it? So stupid!!! My mentors always told me: “NO! You are the one who should change and improve your writing.” “Don’t forget, you are the one who bears the responsibility for clearly conveying your own messages!” I would not understand this until I started reviewing manuscripts and grant applications. The pure frustrations of confusing sentences and messages...
Just like meeting a person for the first time, writing is also all about the first impression. As soon as I see a confusing sentence and I get confused, it would be difficult for me to be fair. That’s human nature.
NIH has an estimate. About 30% of all grant applications get rejected because of poor writing. It's not that the reviewers reject an application on the ground of poor writing. But because they simply won't understand your message. How can you expect them to give you millions of $$$ when they don't even understand what you want to do? As soon as you confuse people, they will be less likely to be willing to spend time on your writing. That means they will simply give up trying to understand and begin to interpret your writing in the ways that they like. Is it fair? No! But that’s human nature. You can’t blame human nature.
If you insist on maintaining the current style of writing, which is fine with me, you need to prepare yourself for more misunderstandings. It may be bias, but it’s a bias that you created.
My suggestion to you would be to stick to facts and discussions about the PLA. Don’t make jokes, especially sarcastic jokes. These jokes are difficult to interpret even among those with the best language skills. It depends on the time of the day and the mood of the readers.
We have been adviced by our HR not to including jokes, especially sarcastic jokes, in our emails and text messages. More often than not, these jokes are misunderstood and cause huge issues among colleagues. If you cannot convey your messages clearly, the chances of misunderstanding gets astronomically high.
Again, I understand your frustration as well. I would also like to call on other fellow members of the SDF to understand FORBIN. As I said above, I used to be in his shoes. I used to blame the reviewers for having bias against me and for being stupid. I've said these exact words myself. So I know the feeling. It's also human nature. I am hoping that, like me, you all can calm down and have more understanding for each other. Again, this is a two-way street.
