Joining of the 2nd 055....

View attachment 38767

the pictures at terraserver show the full hull 1 length from bow to stern as well, allowing a nice view of 055's true length and an estimate by using the 052D alongside.

Considering measurement of 052D's length on GE is 156m, using this latest picture I put 055's length at about 181m (I measure 055 to 052D screen or pixel length ratio of about 1.16:1)

On the upperside of the 2nd 055, is this another bow section of a 055? The 3rd one?
I think that's the upper module of the bow section of the ship. The lower module is already lined up with the rest of the ship but the shadow it casts is noticeably shorter than other sections. This implies that the section hasn't had its top module fitted yet, which should be the one lying off to the side.

Hulls #1 and #2 are being built at Jiangnan, #3 and #4 at Dalian. Whether or not there will be more ships in this batch is unknown, but either way, I don't think they will start building more until these four are launched.

yeap, building the size 055 (for navy) which China hasn't built before .. is simply amazing and interesting ... even more considering China is really not in hurry or at war ... and China also building a lot other big ships (i.e 002, 052D, 054A, 056, 071, 095, etc) .. it's just mind blowing :)

It seems China is so confident and has a very deep pocket... no other country (even the US) could do it at the moment

If it were not in a hurry, it would not have built four 055's all at once, especially for a class of ship that China has never built before.

Except that in terms of tonnage under construction, the US is still ahead of China. And the US still spends far more in defense than China, even after taking into account the purchasing power of the respective currencies.

It is at least plausible that the pace of 055 construction could have been influenced by China's expectations of a deteriorating security environment in the near future, though if that were the case one would have expected such concerns to also be reflected in the annual military budget.

An alternative explanation is that an increased rate of destroyer production could be compensation for an imminent gap in frigate production as 054A winds down.

I think it's also plausible that the pace of 055 construction is because the Chinese Navy is looking to significantly expand over the longer term, and that what we are seeing is not so much a short term aberration but rather the beginning of a new longer term pattern/rate that we may continue to see for an extended period into the future.

I also don't see how production of a destroyer is needed to "compensate" for "gap" in frigate production. I'm sure I don't need to say how a ship like 055 and 054A fulfill quite different roles in the Navy. They're not even built at different shipyards.
And even as 054A production winds down, it's quite heavily expected that it will be succeeded by 054B in production without too much of pause (like many year long).
