China and Ukraine have signed an agreement to recommence production of the Antonov An-225 'Cossack' strategic airlifter, media from both countries have reported.

The agreement signed between the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC) and Antonov on 30 August gives China access to the aircraft's designs and technologies for the purposes of domestic production, according to China's STCN news organisation and the Ukrainian Business Channel (UBR).

Powered by six Progress D-18T engines and having demonstrated a world-record payload of 253.82 tonnes, the An-225 (named Mriya in Ukraine) is the largest transport aircraft ever to have flown. Having been originally built to carry the Soviet Buran orbiter, the aircraft made its maiden flight in 1988. Only one aircraft was ever finished to an airworthy standard and flown, and while work on a second example was begun it had become clear by mid-2001 that funding would no longer be provided and the project was shelved. The sole aircraft to be completed is now chartered by Antonov Airlines to fly outsized cargo throughout the world.

According to the reports, China now plans to fly the first of an unspecified number of An-225s in 2019.

You are about 9 months behind. Once again old news.

Unless you got something new to add, please go through the thread and see what's already there.

Pardon and I really don't know what to say !???

You post a report from 2016 that was already posted, a report that has NOTHING new ...

To admit I'm speechless.

You simply don't get it and Your report confirms nothing, at least not that there is anything already under construction that will fly in 2019 but only that Jane's China-related reports are more on sensation than on rational.

On the subject of An-225, it will be interesting to see how many new airframes are produced as a result of this agreement. I can't imagine that it will be many as it is not exactly a general purpose aircraft.

Can I come along as a teacher's helper or chaperone

I will come as a school student. :D

IMO if that beast will ever fly in China as a Chinese-build version, it will most likely fulfill the originally role, it was always planned for: as a dedicated heavy lift transport for a space system.

by the way, I'm still very much unsure, if that ever will happen and I'm 100% sure, not until 2019.

The new company was not involved in any aerospace project so far, it has build nothing so far and not even has an infrastructure for manufacturing.
Even more, the second hull is still sitting in Kiev and I don't know how soon it could be delivered ... even if this could be done in 2017/18, how should a company without a factory - and it has to be a huuuuuge one :D -

by the way - and here a hint on Jane's reliability: :p

This is plain wrong, since not AVIC, but the Aerospace Industry Corporation of China (AICC) - an so far unknown import-export company operating out of Hong Kong - signed that contract. If it was AVIC, I would be more assured, but AICC !!??? Come on ...

So long,
Deino ;)

Producing and modernizing the An-225 should give China invaluable insights into designing and especially manufacturing a C939 counterpart to the 747/A380 if they choose to do it, though such a project would be deeply dependent on its ability to be certified all over the world.

Highly unlikely. An-225 is a cobble together contraption that grafts some off the shelf parts from the an-124 with some custom designed and essentially hand built parts, intended for a production run of 2 airframes.

It is hardly a good place to start for finding out about mass producing a really large jet.

Why wouldn't the Chinese simply convert one of the Boeing 747s in the air china fleet for the role of space system transport rather than start from scratch to build one off monster for this purpose?

If the Chinese really wants to actually go through the trouble of setting up production for a heavy lifter, and would copy one rather than design one, wouldn't the still enormous but far more practically sized and versatile An-124 be a far better bet than this monsterosity?
