Welcome to Singapore!

JS Izumo leading the formation during 6th Western Pacific Navy Symposium Multilateral Sea Exercise before arriving in Singapore for the naval review. Warships from Canada, France, Vietnam, Japan, Pakistan, the Republic of Korea, the Republic of Singapore, the Philippines, and the U.S. participated in the exercise. Bascially, the JApaniese now have four flitillas that can be built around four of those types of carriers.

I want to see the next iteration of those vessels, beyond the HYuga and IZumo classes, when they build one that is made for the F-35B.

Make no mistake, I believe that they will.

I know that the new South Korean Dokdo vessel is going to be built to handle the F-35B.

We kow the ROyal Navy carriers will. We know that the Turks are saying that their carres will and we know that the Italians will.

I expect we will see more and more countries, including Japan, have jump jet carriers that can handle the F-35B. it's just too inticing.

I think it would be politically difficult for the japanese government to get carriers that are meant to operate the F-35B. Considering the SDF is only allowed to defend Japan and every small try to change its limitations leads to a big debate, any intention to operate strike aircraft from an aircraft carrier would be very problematic.

Is there a website of the Japanese Navy which shows me which excercises are planned in the near future. I'm around New Year in the Hiroshima area and thought a short trip to Kure for the Yamato museum would be great + some modern ships.

The Izumo class could already operate them.

We will know that there is an intent...and it can easily be argued that with China building carries like they are, that these much smaller carriers carrying 10-12 F-35Bs would be a defensive measure against the potential threat...when the Japanese budget proposals include any F-35Bs in them.

We already know that they are going to buy quite a few F-35As.

Nothing is set in stone, especially about a country's security. Japan will rearm because clouds on its horizon compels it to return to a "normal" country. It is doing so now, and I'm of the opinion that would happen with or without Shinzo Abe. It would be slower without Abe though. I'm also in the minority camp of thinking Japan should build nuclear weapons as ultimate deterrence against attacks from China, and nuclear blackmail from the DPRK. It's past time for Japan to acquire the ability to defend itself.

I truly doubt that USA will let Japan have nuke, as long as it has dominating power on Japan politics and government - one of the most skillful and successful controls ever in human history, I will say.

Reason of my doubt: till yet, there happened only one country used nuke on another one. And that attack is not just once, but twice. On top of that, the one bombed had NOT apologize for the war it started, i.e. Till yet, it deems itself some kind of victim of WW2, truly. If I'm USA leader, I definitely do not want to bet me and my country's luck on this country will never, ever, want some sort of "justice".

Agreed US would continue its opposition to Japan and other non-nuclear countries developing or buying nuclear weapons. Nonetheless, US might not be able to prevent it, because the day Tokyo truly believes it can't count on Washington to fight a nuclear war with China to protect Japan is the day it will consider all options to defend itself. I suspect that day is already here, that's why we see Shinzo Abe behave the way he behaves.

The counter argument is when threatened, nations do whatever in their power to defend themselves. Japan isn't an exception to the rule, and future Japanese generations aren't any less interested in survival than Imperial Japanese generations. Japan will do whatever it needs for security, of that I'm 100% certain.

I can accept some your point, such as nations do whatever to defend themselves. Nevertheless, nuke is indeed (at least in today's technology, or before 100% BMD protection) the Pandora's box. Risk is simply too high.

Two more points:
1) If you look at the diplomatic situation since WW2, actually China is betting on USA to prevent Japan to go to nuke.
2) For Japan to "escape" from USA control, it requires huge determination and/or fighting spirit, especially for new generation of Japan (30~). Till yet, I truly can not find it, at least from all my Japanese friends in similar ages -- repeat: USA control on Japan is really a master piece. All they care or concern for now is internal affair: aging population, job security, new global competition, etc.

I tend to say we have to agree to disagree. Thanks.

The most and reason Japan does not pursue nukes is article 9 of the Japanese constitution. The second is the Nuclear non-proliferation treaty that Japan had ratified in the end of the 60's. Neither the US or PRC has any say into this and never had.

The US does not control Japan just like the US does not control any other nations. They may influence and persuade but at the end each and every nation determines their own fate based on their own national interest.
So please will you boys stop with these hallucinations as if one nation has complete control over the other.
