Those ships with the F-35 and V-22 Japan will effectively have 2x medium carriers, 2x small carriers, and 3x LHD/mini carriers.
Of the Izumo, Hyuga, and Osumi, the only ones that would ever possibly carry the F-35 are the Izumo.

...and I believe that the Japanese are considering another, as yet unbuilt class for any poential F-35B use anyway.

IF Japan, (and I stress the IF part) is going to construct a next generation carrier type it will certainly be a full blown conventional aircraft carrier with offset flight deck and EMAL. This can easily be developed with research in developing the superconductive MAGLEV system.
The size would be something between Izumo and Nimitiz class at around 290m length, 60,000~80,000 tonnes(full load).
Basically a pocket carrier based on the Izumo has too many limitation for actual operation in real world situation of today.

Nah, it's OK until you run against PLAN ;) I think that F-35 will be introduced finally for the next big project which will be amphibious assault vessels similar to US Navy's LHD's. But surely they will have to learn a lot from US and Royal Navies which will be going soon through the painful process of adaptation to the new technology.

Basically an EMAL is a superconductive MAGLEV and JR Central has ample test result concerning this kind of equipment.
The F-18E at full load is around 10 tonnes while the MLX-01 was around 22~24 tonnes Japan has enough test data and electrical equipment to fit one right now.

JMSDF seriously needs more tankers

Japan don' t have important needs, the main mission is protect her sea lines of communication saying up to Malacca Strait in fact up to Taiwan/Philippines about, China going for an other naval strategy.

Everything I have read and seen to date regarding a potential class of four air-centric vessels has indiated it would not be CATOBAR.

I do not think so.

If it was optimized for F-35Bs with a suitable hanger, and carried a small squadron of EV-22 AEW, carrying maybe three AEW, 18 F-35Bs, and a couple of either SeaHawks or MV-22s for SAR, it would be a very capable vessel.

Here is one illustration I saw of what a JMSDF, fixed-air centric vessel might look like.

You can see how it would be a natural extension of the Izumo class. While I know the JMSDF would love to have a couple of full on carriers...I have to imagine that the Defense Ministry would also be happy with four of those type vessels shown above.

Compare thta photo with one of my favorite Izumo photos:

Izumo-01.jpg

Tret the deck, at the ski-jump, adjust the hanger accordingly along with the ordinance lifts and bunkerages, addd Pri-fly...and you can get to that pictur above fairly directly.

Then the JMSDF would have its four DDH for ASW, troops traansport/movement, and humanitarian, one for each flitilla, and also have a carrier for each too.

The Osumi are quite small but why don't you think the Hyuga will host F-35s?
The hanger is too small. The deck length is sub-optimal for optimizing take-off with decent ordinance and fule load. None of the deck is heat treated for F-35B heat issues.

Even if those issues were able to be addressed (and the hanger and deck length issues will not be addressed on the Hyuhga class), they would carry far too few F-35Bs to make it worth it...and on top of all of that, the Japanese do in fact need the ASW flagship capabilities of those vessels.

I think the Izumo could carry six airfraft f the treated the vessel...but that would also be too few.

No, read my last few posts, IMHO, the best near to mi-term answer for the JMSDF is a dedicated, fixed-air centric version of the Izumo class.
