China's SCS Strategy Thread

PRC chance of winning the case from Hague Court is zero, especially the Head of ICJ judges in Hague is a Japanese judge.

NOTE:
US ( Ronnie Reagan ) ignore ICJ ruling against US ( US versus Nicaragua case ).

Please don't mix them up.
Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) is not International Court of Justice (ICJ).

I know some mainstream media in the west mix them up, because they think it would give verdict more weight.

according to Reuters China celebrates Communist Party's 95th birthday, Xi warns on graft, security
Chinese President Xi Jinping warned on Friday that the biggest threat to the ruling Communist Party is corruption, as he used the party's 95th birthday to also warn against any threats to China's security and Taiwan independence.

Since Xi took power more than three years ago, he has mounted a sweeping campaign against deep-rooted graft, warning like others before him it could threaten the party's rule, and taken a muscular approach to protecting China's sovereignty, including its contested claims in the South China Sea.

In a wide-ranging speech in Beijing's Great Hall of the People, Xi said that history had chosen the Communist Party to lead China, but that if they did not manage the party properly and listen to the people, then history would discard them.

"As the ruling party, the biggest danger we face is corruption," Xi told party members, in comments carried live on state television.

"We must have a staunch will, not let up on our zero tolerance attitude, investigate all cases and punish those who are corrupt, to give corrupt elements no place to hide in the party," he added.

Dozens of senior officials have been jailed in Xi's anti-graft battle, including powerful former domestic security chief Zhou Yongkang.

But China faces external challenges too.

Beijing has been infuriated by a case lodged by the Philippines at an international arbitration court over the South China Sea, vowing neither to participate in the case nor accept the ruling, which is due July 12.

Without making direct reference to the South China Sea, Xi said that while China was not a trouble maker, no foreign country should think China would trade away its core interests.

"Do not expect that we will swallow the bitter fruit of damage to our sovereignty, security and development interests," he said to an audience including military officers, model workers and ethnic minorities.

Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan also have South China Sea claims.

A further headache for Xi this year has been January's election in self-ruled and democratic Taiwan of a president from the pro-independence Democratic Progressive Party, Tsai Ing-wen.

"We will resolutely oppose Taiwan independence splitist forces," Xi said, again without a direct mention of Tsai or her party.

"The 1.3 billion of China and the entire Chinese race will never agree to any person, at any time, using any method to carry out activities to split the country."

China views Taiwan as a wayward province and has never renounced the use of force to bring its under Beijing's control.

Tsai has vowed to maintain peace with China.

President Duterte is agreable to negotiate the SCS dispute. Yet some governments (USA, etc) are working behind the scene to prevent this and would rather keep the tensions high to serve their own goals. Why else would they be so keen on preventing a peaceful settlement?

MANILA, Philippines - President Duterte yesterday said he would not “taunt or flaunt” a favorable ruling on a highly sensitive legal challenge against Beijing over a South China Sea dispute.

But it was unclear whether Duterte intended to telegraph his soft diplomatic punches, with his comments made during his first Cabinet meeting yesterday that was broadcast live on national television before being cut abruptly during the discussions on China.

In that meeting, Duterte said a favorable ruling from the UN tribunal is a “moral victory” for the Philippines. But he also cautioned Foreign Affairs Secretary Perfecto Yasay Jr. against adopting a hardline stance against China over the matter.

Duterte said the UN tribunal ruling would be a “cliffhanger.”

Duterte said he is against issuing strong statements against China even if the ruling goes in favor of the Philippines.

Duterte urged the agencies concerned to study all options the Philippines would take should it get a favorable ruling.

“We will study progressively on how we would utilize it. Of course, it would be a moral victory but we can’t put the country in an awkward position,” he added.

As much as possible, Duterte said he does not want to instigate violence if there’s opportunity to talk peace.

“As for me, I do not want it (violence). God knows, I really do not want any fighting with anybody. If we can have peace by just talking, I will be really very happy,” he said.

Yasay said some foreign governments had been urging the Philippines to make stronger statements against China.

“I am averse to that idea and I told them in no unmistakable terms,” Yasay said.

Yasay did not name the governments that had been pushing for stronger statements, but described them as “those who are concerned about ensuring freedom of navigation.”

The United States has been one of the most vocal nations calling for China to ensure “freedom of navigation” in the South China Sea.

At the end of the day China is still a (much closer) neighbor and a major trading partner. I don't think that any level-headed leader wants to escalate the situation more than he/she needs to.

Agreed and true for any level-headed leader. Nonetheless, I was highlighting the statements from newly appointed Foreign Affairs Secretary Perfecto Yasay Jr. where non-claimant's governments are pressing what the new Philippine government should do.

Duterte and his new government might be the best chance the region will have in as many years to de-escalate the SCS territorial dispute and to prevent it from becoming a major military flashpoint in the world.

Let's see how this pans out.

Nonsense. You're wrong on several fronts:
  1. You have absolutely no evidence of any sort to make bias claims against any of the judges, regardless of nationality
  2. Building on item 1, your charge one judge among several equates to zero chance of generally positive outcomes for China isn't rational, because it requires the majority of judges to render unjust rulings
  3. Unlike totalitarian states (like the PRC and the DPRK), Japan is a free country, and the likelihood of the government successfully pressuring one of its renowned judges to on international courts to render ruling he or she doesn't believe in is low
The bottom line is serious charges require serious proof, and you've provided only biased personal views, and you've provided no proof whatsoever.

And why should that surprise anyone? Nations pursue their own interests, and when it's all said and done, great powers answer only to other great powers on issues they truly care about.

Are we to assume that you will be equally as dismissive about China's reaction when China ignores the ruling on the SCS?
