And now he get a Winchester !
F-35 test pilot Maj Charles "Flak" Trickey fires the first aerial gun test burst of the GAU-22/A 25mm gun from F-35A aircraft AF-2. The gun will provide operational F-35A pilots the ability to engage air-to-ground or air-to-air weapon targets, in addition to beyond visual range air-to-air missiles and precision-guided air-to-ground weapons. A little little " handicap " for Stealth fighters in this case the F-35 has to open up gun trap doors to use the gun, which adds 0,5 second delay.
180 rounds for F-35A internal gun and 220 rounds for external stealth pod on F-35B/C.
GAU-22/A fires 184 g projectile with 16,7% HEI content (~31 g) at 1.040 m/s muzzle velocity max rate of fire of 3,300 rounds per minute.

But especialy Rafale and Su-35 get a more lethal gun, shell of 30 mm more big 275g about vs 184 g.

GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump promised to cancel the F-35 fighter jet program if he gets elected, Trump told Hugh Hewitt during his radio show.

This was the first time Trump has given any specific details about his defense policy.

"When they say that this cannot perform as well as the planes we already have, what are [we] doing, and why are we spending so much more money?" — Trump said during the show.

"So when I hear that… I say we have to do something," Trump continued.

Trump was referring to a test report that was leaked last June describing the F-35's poor performance, especially when it came to combat maneuvering capabilities.

Furthermore, last month the Pentagon revealed that the F-35 ejection seat could snap the necks of lighter-weight pilots. That's why until the potentially fatal problem is resolved, the US military announced it would restrict pilots weighing less than 136 pounds from operating the plane.

In addition to technical problems, F-35 fighters are in low demand among US allies. Canada, for example, planned to purchase 65 Lockheed Martin-made F-35s to be the country's next-generation tactical fighter at a cost of $45 billion.

However, the election of Justin Trudeau and his Liberal Party during the past Canadian election might change that. During his election campaign, Trudeau promised to scrap the F-35 deal, stating it was too expensive.

Perhaps then Trump might be right. Why spend more money on something new that can't perform better than the existing product?

Trump will have to educate himself.

In this interview he is parroting a lot of disproven and, quite frankly, ridiculous allegations.

Up to this point he has focused on Immigration, Taxes, etc. and gotten some pretty good advisors in these areas.

He clearly needs to get someone advising him who knows a lot more about military matters in general, and about the F-35 specifically.

Given all of the commitments at home and abroad, and the costs that would be associated with an out and out cancelation...I can almost guarantee that is not going to happen in the least.

Given the performance that the aircraft is displaying at this stage, and the absolute need to replace 30+ year old legacy aircraft, I doubt at this stage that there will be much of a cut back even.

But time will tell.

The full Lot IX contract will be for a total of 55 aircraft for the US military and its allies, including 41 F-35A conventional ground-based aircraft -- 26 for the US Air Force, six for Norway, seven for Israel and two for Japan.

Twelve F-35B Short Takeoff and Vertical Landing aircraft were ordered, six for the US Marine Corps and six for the United Kingdom.

Another two F-35C carrier-based variants were ordered for the US Navy.
In summary, Lot IX will have a cost cap of $5.37 Billion for 41 Alpha, 12 Bravo, and 2 Charlie with delivery by end 2017. Averaging around $98 million a plane (without engines).

The truth is, that other than Canada, our partners are very committed to the F-35 as it will offer each of them a fifth gen aircraft, with capabilities that far overshadow 4 gen or 4.5 gen aircraft? The F-35 does promise very advanced capability, as a Strike aircraft, and even as an A2A platform. I do believe that an advanced F-35 jockey, is gonna get an angle on an average F-22 jockey at some point.

Saying that, I'm just expressing my own personal conviction that the F-35 is going to bring a very profound advantage to every engagement, that even the lovely, very stealthy F-22, is going to find very difficult to counter, even with the bag of tricks the Raptor offers. The F-35 is very dangerous to bad guys, all bad guys, at every level.

as I have stated, and it is a known fact, fifth gen is very expensive, that is the main reason, along with technological barriers, that no one else is currently operating a fifth gen aircraft. Thanks to the F-35 partnership, that is changing, even as we speak, our partners will be operating a "big boys toy" very shortly. YES, it will take some coin, but in comparison to what you are buying, it is a lot of bang for the buck, like getting a Ferrari, for high end Chevy money?? but you will have to maintain it, just like a Ferrari, it will take a good mechanic.

Mr. Trump is shooting off the hip, he will get educated, just like Mr. Obama did?

Could they not design a feature that allows the pilot to open the gun port manually and keep it open?

Once you are in WVR, the tiny compromise in stealth from an open gun port is not going to matter at all, so wouldn't it be better to allow the pilot the option of keeping the port locked open for the entire length of the engagement to remove that small, but no inconsequential lag time between when a pilot presses his trigger and when shells start flying.

Mind you, since the GAU22 is a Gatling, it needs a short spool up time anyways before it can fire, so maybe that 0.5s delay will still be there even if they have a manual "lock open" function for the gun port.
