As just reported on Fox news Russia may be open to Assad not staying in power has this been reported anywhere else also does anyone know if spetznaz is operating in Syria I myself have little doubt that they are
As far as Russia is about Assad will be out when he looses an election. As far as US is concerned he shouldn't be allowed to stand in an election. They don't want free and fair elections. As in Libya they don't have a candidate president with any chance in an election standing against the sitting head of state.

My question is are free and fair election's possible in that part of the world we have not seen any except for Isreal and Turkey as far as I Can remember I really don't think it's possible

people often read only what they want to :)
russian position was always the same: syria must continue as a civil society.
even if you drop the name, it means "assad" (with those around him) will stay: there is no meaningful opposition force or name.
a new generation of chechens grew under leader loyal to kreml. they are faithful muslims and they know good muslims from bad. snap exercises demonstrate ten thousend armed fighters can be called within two hours on alert. some of them already took part in un peace keeping mission in levant. reports indicate they are ready for a new, true "jihad" in levant-magrib.
there are signs of specops conducted in libya p.e., where hostages were freed as a result.
areal bombardments are effective only with ground recc support.

That's what I was thinking they can elect who they want as long as it's Assad or someone that carries on his policies

US begins training ‘moderate rebels’ on Syrian territory – report

US military advisors have begun training so-called ‘moderate rebels’ in Syria, a media report has claimed. The move represents a complete 180 degree turn around from Obama’s 2013 promise not to put any “American boots on the ground in Syria.”
The report from Lebanon’s satellite television channel, Al Mayadeen, cites a military source stating that American military advisors have already arrived in Syria and are training “moderate rebels” near the city of Salma, located in the western province of Latakia.

“American officers began the training of Turkmen militants around Salma in Latakia province,” the channel

the source as saying.

Latakia is where Russia has set up its air base for its ongoing anti-terror operation in Syria. Despite Washington’s assertions that the rebel training is now aimed at pushing back Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL), Syrian military sources cited by RIA Novosti say that no IS forces currently hold positions in northern Latakia. Instead, the Syrian Turkmen militants are fighting alongside the al-Nusra Front extremists against the Syrian Army.

On Friday, White House spokesman Josh Earnest announced that the US would be sending around 50 US advisers to Syria to train so-called ‘moderate rebels.’ Earnest defined the mission as to “train, advise, and assist.”

The new shift in policy is in direct contradiction to what US President Barack Obama promised in 2013 – “I will not put American boots on the ground in Syria,” he said during a televised national address on September 10, 2013.

Obama’s decision is widely viewed as an escalation in the US military’s involvement in the country, Finian Cunningham wrote for RT. “The troop dispatch also signals that the US is trying to forestall Russian successes in wiping out Washington’s regime-change assets in Syria,” Cunningham added.

The move has also been described as

. If, or when, an American soldier gets hurt, the US will have a pretext for putting even more boots on the ground, retired US Air Force Lieutenant Col Karen Kwiatkowski told RT.

“There is a danger of that happening and I think that is part of why they are going there. I think they are looking for an excuse to up the ante, to send more troops and to have a crisis of some sort. Clearly the president has been lying, and so has Ash Carter, about what their real intentions are. So, in my opinion, I think this is provocative and I think it is calculated to put our troops in danger,” Kwiatkowski said.

Moreover, the consequences of any potential US ground operations in Syria would be unpredictable, the head of Russia’s parliamentary committee on foreign affairs said.

“Any operations – air based operations, ground based operations – in Syria by American forces will be illegal,” Kosachev told RT. “They will get trapped, they will get involved in this ongoing conflict and the consequences will be absolutely unpredictable.”

The announcement of American advisors being deployed to train ‘moderate rebels’ in Syria also brings up all the issues concerning the previous failures of the US train and equip program that had been run out of Turkey. The US eventually gave up on the training part of the project, as senior US officials admitted that, despite the program’s $500 million budget, the US had only trained a handful of fighters.

The worst aspect of that failure was that a stockpile of weapons given to the US-trained rebels ended up in the hands of terrorists, after the so-called ‘moderates’ willingly

soon after crossing into Syria.

Back in September, top US General Lloyd Austin told Congress that only four or five US-trained Syrian rebels were still fighting in the war-torn nation, stressing that the training was behind schedule and the military’s goals for the program would not be met on time.
Any confirmation?

The next two weeks should allow us to assess, to some degree, the veracity of the "news" outlets I will post below; if the pace and coherence of regime offensive operations in Aleppo Governorate improve considerably, evincing improved logistical support, we can conclude both that the following reports are generally accurate, and, by extension, we can infer the general accuracy of some of these outlets' other reporting.

"Syrian Army and Hezbollah Liberate the Strategic Highway to Aleppo"

"It took almost two weeks for the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and their allies to clear the imperative Khanasser-Ithriya Highway that leads to the provincial capital of the Aleppo Governorate; however, they were finally able to secure the remaining territory along the roadway that was under the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS).

On Wednesday morning, the Syrian Arab Army’s 66th Brigade of the 11th Tank Division – in coordination with Hezbollah, the National Defense Forces of Al-Salamiyah, and the Palestinian pro-government militia “Liwaa Al-Quds” (Jerusalem Brigade) – broke-through ISIS’ remaining frontlines at the small villages to the north of Ithriya, resulting in a massive retreat of the terrorist group’s combatants to the Al-Raqqa Governorate town of Tabaqa.

However, this was no easy retreat for the terrorist group because as they were attempting to retreat along the Salamiyah-Raqqa Highway, they came under attack from the Russian Air Force’s SU-24 fighter jets, who were circling their infantry units trying to flee to safety.

The liberation of the Khanasser-Ithriya Highway was of the utmost importance for the Syrian Arab Army’s Central Command these last few days, as the roadway is the only supply route the Syrian Armed Forces can use to continue their fight against the Islamist rebels and ISIS in the Aleppo Governorate.

For ISIS, the loss of this highway ends their brief east Hama offensive that cost them over 200 combatants and the destruction of their heavy weaponry."

"URGENT: Syrian Army, Hezbollah Win Back Ithriya-Khanasser Strategic Road"
Please, Log in or Register to view URLs content!

"TEHRAN (FNA)- The Syrian Army and Hezbollah fighters, in a joint operation on Wednesday, stormed the positions of ISIL militants across the vitally strategic road connecting Hama's Ithriya to Aleppo's Khanasser and seized its full control, field sources said Wednesday.
The sources said that the Ithriya-Khanasser road in now under the full control of the government forces.

"After fierce clashes with ISIL Takfiri terrorists, the Syrian government forces have brought the Aleppo-Ithriya-Khanasser-Al-Salamiyah highway under their full control. Dozens of militants were killed and now minesweepers have started to demine expolosive devices," one of the battlefield sources said.

Army commanders said the road will open to public trafficking on Thursday.

The road was one of the most important supplying routes of the ISIL militants to dispatch logistic convoys from Hama to Aleppo.

The Syrian army and the Lebanese Hezbollah fighters launched a large-scale attack on ISIL positions along the road on Saturday, and inflicted heavy losses on the militants.

In the Saturday operations, the Syrian army seized control over a 10-kilometer segment of the highway after heavy clashes with the ISIL.

The operation continued this week and the Syrian Army and Hezbollah forces killed and wounded at least 15 Takfiri terrorists on Tuesday.

The Syrian army also regained control of Hill Number 11 on the strategic road after heavy clashes with the terrorists yesterday."

"Media: Syrian Army Takes Control Over Key Highway Connecting Aleppo and Hama"

"SouthFront: Analysis & Intelligence can’t confirm this report. Any kind of the crows of triumph as “full control” or “dozens of terrorists were eliminated” in media can’t be a serious ground for conclusions. Our team estimate a ground situation in the sector as complicated. Even if the SAA has shown got some gains there, the highway will be hardly reopened till the end of the week."

"The highway is connecting the cities of Aleppo and Al-Salamiyah in the Syrian province of Hama. Moreover, the highway is the main supply route for the Syrian government army in the city of Aleppo.

“After fierce fighting with ISIL terrorists, the [Syrian] army has taken full control over the Aleppo-Ithriya-Khanasser-Salamiyah highway. Dozens of terrorists were eliminated. Mine clearance specialists have started to demine explosive devices,” the source said.
Terrorists have controlled the highway during 10 days.

The Syrian army continued its countrywide operations against jihadists, liberating more villages and destroying terrorist infrastructure.

Late October, the Syrian government forces with the support of militia fighters liberated 50 villages in the south-east of Aleppo province."

End of articles.

The significance of this highway cannot be overstated as control of its full length is both essential and critical to sustained operations in all of Aleppo Governorate, and particularly to offensive operations (like re-taking Kuweires). Regime actions in the next weeks should indicate both the extents to which it controls this essential and critical supply-line and that to which the route is reopened.

and, btw, can anyone provide a report of regime forces conducting offensive operations to take critical stretches of highway M5 in Idlib Governorate?

I tell you, expert readers are a dying breed.
