Russian conscripts tell of fears of being sent to Ukraine

MOSCOW (AP) - Human rights groups have received dozens of complaints in the past month from Russian conscripts who say they have been strong-armed or duped into signing contracts with the military to become professional soldiers. The conscripts are then sent to participate in drills in the southern Rostov region bordering Ukraine.

Because only contract soldiers can legally be dispatched abroad, worries are spreading among families that inexperienced young conscripts could be sent to fight in eastern Ukraine alongside pro-Russian separatists. Many soldiers contend that's already happened.

One former soldier told The Associated Press that he was pressured into extending his service.

When the conscript, Alexander, was due to finish his year of mandatory military service in October, he said his commander told him he had no choice: He had to sign a contract and head to southern Russia for troop exercises. The 20-year-old knew that meant he might end up fighting in Ukraine. Other soldiers he talked to had been sent there.

His commanders "didn't talk about it, but other soldiers told us about it, primarily paratroopers who had been there," Alexander said in an interview with the AP, which is not using his surname for his safety.

The former private first class ended his military service this month. He fled Rostov on Dec. 31 and avoided being sent to Ukraine - although not without first being threatened with prison for desertion. He was able to quit legally only after reaching out to NGOs for help.

About the destroyer
That ship has a huge tower. Will it get stability problems? The sole picture of the second destroyer doesnt match the model in the vídeo. Are there 2 designs?
Its the first time i have seen that the leader class destroyer will have 12000t. In wikipedia its 10000t. Where did you get that number?

This article says nothing about tonnage, but talks about nuclear or turbine propulsion, and completion no earlier than 2023/2025

Also, the carrier
The model in that video is huge. Its the size of a supercarrier. Does russia have a fleet to escort it? Does it even have the expertise to built it, taking into account that it hasnt built anything bigger than a frigate since the end of SU?

This is an article that talks about the future russian carrier. It mentions two sources about completion date. One states that it will be done before the end of 2025. Another states that it will be after 2030. Strange.

doesn't show the particular 5900 kW model I found at the Russian website though, which of course doesn't mean anything), and ... fell under 2014 sanctions ... the building of (numbers at the shipbuilder) 1005 and 1006 has been suspended and it was most recently announced they would get the same (weaker) Russian engines 16Д49 as their Project 20380/1 predecessors (4400 kW which is the power of more than 5898 horses I also found out the fuel consumption would correspond to about 21 tons per 24 hours

P.S. The propulsion is CODAD with four of these engines.

These are typical coastal defense ships . They were not designed for long cruises but for short "sorties" lasting few days , performing raids on enemy shipping or installations in vicinity of their base, and then returning to port .
