Rise of the Euro-Spooky!
note how these gunships are based on smaller platforms then the AC130. There armament mix is far closer to a attack helicopter and the AC130J then the earlier AC130 types.

NATO to upgrade AWACS fleet
By: CRAIG HOYLELONDON Source: Flightglobal.com 11:08 8 Aug 2014
NATO’s fleet of Boeing E-3A airborne warning and control system (AWACS) aircraft is to undergo a digital flightdeck update, under a programme worth around $250 million.

Work in support of the upgrade has already been conducted by Boeing under an engineering, manufacturing and development (EMD) phase contract involving one of NATO’s 707-derived AWACS platforms. Flight testing with the enhanced aircraft is due to commence in the fourth quarter of this year, with the asset to be returned to use in December 2015.

“The new technology ensures compliance with current and future air traffic control and navigation requirements, giving the aircraft broader access to airspace around the world,” says Boeing. Other advantages of the new avionics package (pictured below) include improved access to engine, navigation and radar data, which enables a reduction from four to three flightdeck personnel.

Modifications to a further 13 of the NATO fleet will begin in 2016, with the programme scheduled for completion in 2018. The alliance’s E-3A component has 17 of the type, which are based at Geilenkirchen in Germany.

Boeing also will perform the same avionics update on one of the US Air Force’s AWACS aircraft from November, as part of the same EMD contract placed by NATO. Flightglobal’s Ascend Fleets database records the service as having 30 E-3B/Cs in use.

Beautiful reports on the FFG Bergamini class here

Very nice ships, 2 guns, very large ASW power but lack of missiles.

FREMM comparison for main armament :

Bergamini GP variant : 1 x 127, 1 x 76, 4 AShM, 16 SAM, 2 ASW helos
Rinascimento ASW variant : 2 x 76, 4 AshM, 4 ASW missiles, 2 ASW helos

8 sure 4 GP and 4 ASW maybe seems difficult because... 2 others GP variants.

Aquitaine : 1 x 76, 8 AShM, 16 SAM, 16 CM 1 ASW helo. Note : can carry also Aster 15 instead of CM.
Aquitaine AAW variant 1 x 76, 8 AShM, 32 SAM ( 16 MR, 16 LR ), 1 ASW helo.

A400M undergoes tanker test campaign
By: Beth Stevenson, London - 4 hours ago

An air-to-air refuelling test campaign using a Boeing F/A-18 Hornet (pictured) has proven the capability of Airbus Defence and Space’s A400M transport aircraft to act as an in-flight refuelling tanker.

The A400M performed 33 dry contacts over five flights. The transport also transferred 18.6t of fuel to a Hornet during 35 wet contacts, Airbus adds.

The A400M has a basic fuel capacity of 50.8t, and in its standard configuration has refuelling provisions. However, this capacity can be increased using extra cargo hold tanks, so the aircraft can be used as a tanker.

So far, 2 aircraft have been delivered to France and one to Turkey I think, the UK and Germany also exspect their first aircraft later this year. A much need addition to the transport capacity of these countries, in some places greatly expanding capabilities.
Having a tanker capability is also a great option to suplement the A-330 MRTTs.

Re: European armed forces

Turkey already used its first A-400 in Anatolia Eagle and the second Turkish A-400 has been fully built and is undergoing installation of equipment

I hope Turkey orders the full 25 units like originally planned they need them

Even though the Swiss have pulled out of the deal to buy new Saab Gripen E/F jets, Sweden will still go ahead with the program. Great news, it's a great airplane, and the Swedes surely can use it. Brazil also intents to get 36 of the jets.
Maybe there's further potential in other places.
Even more interestingly, the Sea Gripen concept is still there. Although that is probably a bit unlikely to materialize, unfortunately.

Sweden to Buy Next-Generation Jets Despite Swiss Pullout
Aug. 29, 2014 - 10:18AM | By AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE

STOCKHOLM — Sweden said Friday it would go ahead with the purchase of a new generation of Saab Gripen fighter jets, despite Switzerland pulling out of a major co-financing deal.

"Global developments and Russian action in Ukraine, with troops in the country, underline the importance of us pursuing the acquisition of the next generation fighter aircraft," defense minister Karin Enstroem told public broadcaster SVT.

"This is also about our security and defence capability in the future," she said.

The Swedish government previously said it would only purchase the JAS 39 Gripen E — currently being developed by the Swedish aerospace firm Saab — if it had another buyer to share the development costs.

Switzerland had planned to buy 22 of the 60 fighter jets ordered by Sweden and share development costs, until voters rejected the deal in a May referendum.

SVT estimated the additional price tag for Sweden to be in the region of "several billion" kronor (several hundred million euros) and said the decision was supported by the main opposition party, currently leading in polls for next month's general election.

The 60 jets are due for delivery in 2018.

Perhaps some of the 22 jets the Swiss were to order will now go to Brazil?

I believe these are going to be very good aircraft.

Assembly of the first pre-production aircraft began a year ago and it's ment to have it's maiden flight sometime next year. The first production aircraft is supposed to be delievered in 2018. I think the FAB exspects it's first jet in December of that year.
Saab and Embraer have signed the MoU governing the project six weeks ago. I don't think there was a detailed plan yet how the jets coming off the production line would have been split between Sweden and Switzerland, but as of now it looks like Brazil will get it's jets very early on.

F-X2: Brazil Picks Saab’s JAS-39 Gripen-NG over Rafale, Super Hornet
Jul 13, 2014 16:18 UTC by Defense Industry Daily staff

As Brazil started boosting its defense budgets in past years, its Navy and Army received funds to replace broken-down equipment, while new fighters will be a critical centerpiece of the Forca Aerea Brasileira’s efforts.

Boeing’s F/A-18 E/F Super Hornet, France’s Dassault’s Rafale, Saab’s JAS-39 Gripen NG were picked as finalists. But after repeated stalling, for years the question was whether Brazil would actually place an order, or fold up the competition like the ill-fated 2011 F-X process. At the end of 2013 Brazil unexpectedly picked the Swedish offer, though offsets, price, and lack of diplomatic baggage, all can explain the decision.

[...]

Latest update:

July 11/14: Industrial. There’s no agreement yet for the Gripen lease, but Saab and Embraer have signed the expected Memorandum of Understanding around JAS-39E/F production. Embraer will be the Brazilian industrial lead, performing its own assigned work while managing all local sub-contractors in the program. They’ll also work with Saab on systems development, integration, flight tests, final assembly and deliveries, with full joint responsibility for the 2-seat JAS-39F Gripen NG. Re: European armed forces

Multiple European rapid reaction forces being formed, with the British/Eastern European one announced earlier this week, or last week, apparently not technically under NATO.

BRUSSELS Mon Sep 1, 2014 1:38pm EDT

(Reuters) - NATO leaders will respond to the Ukraine crisis by agreeing this week to create a "spearhead" rapid reaction force, potentially including several thousand troops, that could be sent to a hotspot in as little as two days, officials said on Monday.

The 28-nation alliance already has a rapid reaction force but U.S. President Barack Obama and other leaders meeting for a NATO summit in Wales on Thursday and Friday are expected to create a new force that would be able to respond more quickly to a crisis.

The speed with which Russian forces infiltrated Ukraine's Crimea region in March has focused minds at NATO on speeding up its ability to respond if a similar crisis ever occurred on NATO territory.

"We will develop what I would call a spearhead ... a very high-readiness force able to deploy at very short notice. This spearhead would be provided by allies in rotation, and could include several thousand troops, ready to respond where needed with air, sea and special forces support," NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen told a news conference.

A senior NATO official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the spearhead force could range from "a very small size up to something potentially as large as a brigade size". A NATO brigade typically numbers between 3,000 and 5,000 troops.

The official said the force would be able to deploy to a crisis zone in just two days. Other NATO sources said however that some elements of the force might take longer to arrive.

Currently it takes five days for the first units of NATO's rapid reaction force to arrive.

The creation of the new force will be one of a range of measures in a "readiness action plan" that NATO will adopt at the summit to step up deterrence in response to the Ukraine crisis.

BASES

Eastern European NATO members, including Poland, have appealed to NATO to permanently station thousands of troops on its territory to deter any possible Russian attack.

But NATO members have spurned that idea, partly because of the expense and partly because they do not want to break a 1997 agreement with Russia under which NATO committed not to permanently station significant combat forces in the east.

Instead NATO leaders will agree to pre-position equipment and supplies, such as fuel and ammunition, in eastern European countries with bases ready to receive the NATO rapid reaction force if needed,

This will enable the new rapid reaction force to "travel light, but strike hard if needed", Rasmussen said.

Infrastructure such as ports and airstrips in Poland and the Baltics may have to be upgraded to enable them to receive reinforcements quickly if needed, NATO officials say.

The goal of the NATO plan is to show that it is serious about its key commitment that an attack on one NATO member is considered an attack on all and that it would come to the aid of any NATO ally if it faced aggression.

NATO will continue with the short-term measures it put in place in response to the Ukraine crisis which include sending more fighter aircraft to the Baltics and stepping up military exercises in eastern Europe.

The "spearhead" force is different to a new "joint expeditionary force" that Britain and six other NATO allies plan to set up, NATO officials said.

"What the UK is doing ... is establishing this joint expeditionary force which could be used for NATO but could be used for other things as well, whether a European Union operation, a U.N. operation or indeed national operations," the senior NATO official said.

The British-led force could follow behind NATO's spearhead force in a crisis, he said.

NATO leaders will also "enhance the breadth and depth" of the naval forces it has on standby, which allies take turns to contribute to.

They will also work to improve alliance intelligence capabilities and its ability to respond to the type of "hybrid" warfare used by Russia in Ukraine, which NATO officials say have included disinformation, subversion and cyber attack.
