This could be an interesting tactic for Japan if there is any flare up in the Okinawa isles.
As the article mentions Ground SDF's Western Army Infantry Regiment trained as Marine are based in Sasebo, Nagasaki Prefecture right next to the airport in question.
They can act as rapid response team in which the closest flat top destroyer cruises to the site as fast as they can and the rapid response team can move out on Osprey with minimum preparation and rendezvous midway using the Flattop as final staging area.
The requirements is that the flattops store necessary provisions(ammo and heavy gear) for the troops 24/7.
The response time at the scene with highly trained and equipped troops would probably be within 24 hours after call.

Can't say anything but, through pure speculation JMSDF may remove the type 88 SSM launchers and install the latest type 12 SSM into VLS creating more space for some other goodies.
Another possibility is with the recent technical exchange program Japan may ask for railgun technology from BAE.
I also believe they will install COGLAG type engine for their power train.
I wonder what kind of radar system they will integrate into this ship, FCS-3A or the AN/SPY-1D?
I guess time will only tell.

It says in the article that TRDI had already started development of the on-board type and is scheduled to go on line in FY2017.

Well there it is. Two more Advanced Atago class DDGs. One to start building in 2015 the other in 2016.
