Royal Brunei Navy Darussalam Class OPVs fired their MM40 block II missiles during RIMPAC 2014

For the first time, Royal Brunei Navy Darussalam class offshore patrol vessels, KDB Darussalam and KDB Darulaman fired their MBDA built Exocet MM40 block II anti-ship missiles in the pacific missile range facility (PMRF), 80 nautical miles north of Kaua’i Island as part of the RIMPAC 2014 naval exercise organized by the U.S. Navy.

An RTN selection committee announced on Friday it had chosen Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering to manufacture the frigate, a navy source said.

The company was one of the last two South Korean firms to enter the final round of the bid organised by the RTN panel.

The other three foreign firms ousted from the previous rounds were from Spain, Italy and China.

RTN chief of staff Chakchai Phucharoenyot, who chaired the panel, said Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering was selected because it had proposed specifications for the frigate that were in line with the navy's demands.

The navy also asked the company to manufacture a Combat Management System (CMS) which can be allied to the systems installed in the frigates HTMS Naresuan and HTMS Taksin, he said.

The frigate, which will be the first South Korean-manufactured navy ship in Thailand, is expected to be commissioned in two years' time, Adm Chakchai said.

The new frigate will have a displacement of between 3,000 and 4,000 tonnes.

The cabinet earlier approved the RTN's procurement of two frigates with a budget of 30 billion baht. The frigates will be considered for manufacturing one by one.

According to the navy source, the RTN preferred European frigates but they were too expensive.

doesn't give too many details so I have a question: the article says "... missiles were successfully launched towards the intended target simultaneously at a distance of approximately 40 nautical miles" so I presume no actual target was hit (simply because there was none at that distance ... but what's happened to the missiles then, did they self-destruct by setting off their warheads? or they were programmed to splash into the water? or maybe they simply run out of fuel after reaching the lowest operational range? Indonesia's PT PAL Signs Contract to Supply Strategic Sealift Vessels to the Philippines

Indonesian shipbuilder PT PAL has signed a contract to supply two strategic sealift vessels (SSVs) to the Philippine Navy (PN).

PT PAL executive Edy Andarto confirmed to IHS Jane's on 17 July that the contract - worth USD92 million - was signed with the PN in June and calls for the vessels to be supplied in 2016 and 2017.

The contract also stipulates a requirement for PT PAL to provide an integrated support package that will enable Philippine industry to undertake maintenance and support of the SSVs in partnership with the PN.

Discussions over the SSV contract had continued since January when PT PAL emerged as the sole bidder in the programme.

Japan provides Vietnam with 6 vessels

HANOI, Vietnam — Japan will provide Vietnam with six vessels as part of a grant aid package that will boost Hanoi’s maritime security patrol capacity at a time the country is locked in a territorial standoff with China in the South China Sea.

The deal announced Friday for the six used vessels worth 500 million Yen ($5 million) was signed by Vietnam’s Minister of Planning and Investment Bui Quang Vinh and Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida, who is on a two-day visit for a cooperation conference.

“We hope this will help strengthen the maritime law enforcement capability of Vietnam,” Kishida told journalists at a news conference with his Vietnamese counterpart Pham Binh Minh.

The deal comes as Vietnam-China relations plunged to their worst point in years following China’s deployment of a giant oil rig in early May near the Paracel islands also claimed by Vietnam.....to read more
