Always love to see the older vessels get their game time. Since most of the new vessels have had their experience conducting this patrol, I wonder if the rest of the 053H3s and even 053H2Gs can be rotated into this patrol deployment? Or does the limitations with their on board desalination capacity make it difficult? However, 528 already did one shift and now 527 is doing one as well. In terms of displacement and weapons suite, the older vessels are still plenty adequate against what the pirates field.

I expect if 527 and 528 can do these missions with the necessary equipment, then it shouldn't be difficult to refit the other jiangweis either. If anything I'd expect that process to be completed already or at least well underway.

527 and 528 were the last units launched and commissioned. I wonder if they simply may have newer and different equipment whereas the other units will need some refitting to handle the longer endurance missions. If so, then it becomes a cost justification issue. For instance, 539 is about 23 years old. Not bad but could be in line for a mid-life refit. But given the 056s and 054As, is a refit justified? Or simply sell the vessel and use that proceed plus what it would have cost for a refit to build a new 056?

You can be prototype sure LIAONING will not go hunting Somali pirates!

I wouldn't be so sure. Once the PLAN base in Seychelles is fully functional in a few years, the Liaoning BG may take a long trip through the Indian Ocean and to the Gulf of Aden. Great training, and great PR.
