As much as I hate to say this there might be some truth behind the Su-35 purchase this time around.

According to an article linked by CJDBY, the Chinese Defense Speaker said that "Sino-Russian military cooperation is completely normal and does not target a third country" when inquired about the Su-35 deal by a foreign journalist.

What happened before is that the official media would immediately claim that the deal was none sense and so forth. This time the answer is a bit ambiguous. Which is not good, in my opinion.

Pupu also claimed that the introduction of 24-48 Su-35s, which will be inducted in 2015, will serve as a stop-gag measure due to recent tensions in the East and South China Seas. Others believe that China is after the thrust vectoring capable 117s (which might be fitted onto the J-20s).

I still hope that this is just one of those stupid rumors spun by the irresponsible Russian media. However, I do think that we need to be mentally prepared just in case that the deal happens. There will be much gloating on the internet if the deal is finalized.

You do not expect the Chinese official to always come out and denial a rumour arises? I do no think they are that free. Precisely that is the tactic of Russia. Keep on pumping out the rumour and exhaust the official Chinese rebuke of the rumour. Then they will paint it as real even no plane inducted, deal not signed. And then use this as a marketing for their Su-35 sales.

To be honest, I can see the deal happening too, but more as a measure to cement diplomatic ties, or as part of a larger economic deal (think Siberian oil/gas being pipelined into China), rather than out of any deep desire by the PLAAF or CAC/SAC for the aircraft itself.

EDIT: Think about it - if China is investing untold billions into domestic engine manufacturing, why would they want to spend $4B for essentially 48x117S engines and spares? Granted, the 117S is an extremely good engine, but it's still not a good deal given the price, and the Su-35 doesn't necessarily fit with what the PLAAF will need to fulfill its mission of air/naval dominance in the Western Pacific (stealth, supercruise, BVR/EW capability, ASuW capability, SS/EO Recon capability), for the simple reason that the Su-35 isn't a survivable enough platform on a sortie-attrition basis vs. the F-22/F-35/SM-3 combo.

It is naive to think China will spend 4 billons just to get 117S engine for its J-20. China don't even want to increase a single cent for 38 IL-76 transport plane deal with Russian in 2006. The transport plane prove to be a strategic value for China air projection power as current fleet of IL-76 prove inadequate. And they rather wait, spend money on its own design and now we have the Y-20..

As for the rumours, it always come from the Russian side. Probably after J-20 gets inducted into service. You will still see rumour news like J-20 got damaged by rain and lousy quality J-20 get grounded of the entire fleet. PLAAF needs to buy Su-35 to supplement the J-20.. Then you can admire the Russian persistent and resolute in maintaining their constant rumour about the Chinese side.....

MOSCOW, March 22 (RIA Novosti) – Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin and his Chinese counterpart Wang Yang signed nine economic agreements in Moscow on Friday, including on cooperation in banking, energy and rabbit husbandry.
The Kostroma Region-based company Russky Krolik (Russian Rabbit) now has a new partner in Beijing, and the agriculture ministries of both countries will be working together to develop the fine art of cuniculture, or breeding rabbits, according to the deal package.
Russian petrochemicals company Sintez Group signed an agreement on cooperation with State Grid Corporation of China, while En+ Group, controlled by Oleg Deripaska, agreed to work with China Development Bank and the state-run Shenhua Overseas Development and Investment Co. Ltd in the coal industry.
China Development Bank also signed an agreement with MBC Corporation managing company on principles of financial cooperation.
Russia and China will also launch joint production of heavy drilling rigs, according to a deal between Russia’s Uralvagonzavod corporation and VTB Leasing company and China’s Honghua Group.
VTB Leasing’s owner, the state-run VTB bank, will be working with China Construction Bank, and Rosgosstrakh insurer with China’s Chengdong Investment Corporation.
Finally, Export Insurance Agency of Russia and China Export & Credit Insurance Corporation signed a deal on facultative reinsurance.
The deals were signed ahead of the new Chinese President Xi Jinping’s three-day visit to Russia, which begins on Friday and will be his first foreign trip since assuming office on March 14.
