Submarines and mines truly undetectable to active sonar might become a reality soon

I am surprise that this has not been posted yet, but saw a truly fascinating piece nearly a month ago.

It is still in the earliest phases of concept proving, but this new technology has the potential to completely revolutionize the sonar game.

Subs designed with a more practical example of this shield could potentially be totally invisible to active sonar attempts to find them.

Whether this technology would work in keeping sound from escaping is more questionable, so it probably does not mean all the quiet technologies developed for subs are no obsolete. But since targeting requires active sonar to get the required accuracy, having a sub with such an acoustic cloaking shell will still render pretty much every existing anti-sub weapon other than the depth charge useless.

Such shells applied to naval mine warfare would probably have a far more fundamental impact, as such cloaked mines would be near impossible to find with any existing technology, and the technology could easily be applied in its current form for such devices with not much more R&D required.

Hum, seem I made a boo boo with the title and put 'true' instead of 'truly' (last minute change as the original title I had in mind had too many characters).

But I do not seem to be able to edit the title of the thread, can a mod be kind enough to change it for me please?

Thanks.

UV LIDAR and other non-acoustic tracking systems that the Russians have developed are something Chinese researchers should be looking at to increase the transparency of undersea movement, that would be a major counteraction to acoustic quieting (and allow for faster detection and tracking than sound too).

The US has trained dolphins and sea lions to scout for land mines.

What is the effective range of LIDAR? Fighter borne IRST struggle to get near the 100km mark for detecting things, and visibility in water is far worse than in the air.

Regarding animals searching for mines, well since dolphins also use sonar, a something cloaked with an acoustic quieting shell will be as invisible to them as well as it is to military sonar.

This is correct...I once had a neighbor in San Diego who's job it was to train dolphins to retrieve mines & torpedos. And of course scout for them.
