Been seeing a lot of posts on Chinese social media crapping on Singapore these days. Not sure what happened.

We know theres already a huge influx of Indians in Singapore but that's not new. It's been like that for a while. So I'm not sure what's so special about this time.

Don't care, Indians now become some type of political dog whistle. I remember once the Chinese government changed the visa policy, leading many Chinese people on the internet to worry about indians immagration, although in China, Burmese are the largest immigration group.

Singapore has been jumping up and down trying to get US to stay in Asia after Trump is displaying signs of wanting to bail.
Latest seething against that one movie about Chinese diaspora in SEA is tangentially related. Basically Singapore right now is joint at the waist to "rule based order" and ultimately there isn't anything actually stopping Singapore from jumping ship and changing to operate under a community of common destiny for mankind model (China after all isn't interested in making Singapore a part of China proper). But to do so would mean the current leadership would have to be replaced by a new bunch with a different outlook.

The more Chinese diaspora think about "hmmm, yes I would like to trace my root back to China, while we're at it we should maybe be in something like a five eye alliance with China", the more it panics the ruling class.

Singapore's new prime minister recently made some unfriendly remarks, and zaobaosg sharply criticized a Chinese film about overseas Chinese in Southeast Asia.
Singapore's behavior is particularly unusual among Asian countries with large ethnic Chinese populations. Its political stance is also gradually moving closer to that of Taiwan.
Indian immigrants are not the reason for the online criticism in China; it's just that most people believe Singapore's opportunism is remarkably similar to that of Indians.
