Prof Stephen Roach, had a long career as head of Goldman Sachs Asian division, then he grew old and returned to the United States to be a professor at an Ivy League university.
During his stint in Asia, which I think lasted around a decade, he was one of the most pro-China guys around, in that he was always positive. That was during the ChiAmerica phase of the relationship between China and the US. Obviously, that came to an end. But, back in the day, no one really knew where that was going to go, and everyone was making money, so it all positive.
That is why I cannot say anything bad or think negatively about Professor Roach, because he was a friend of China, and believe he still is.
When he wrote that article saying Hong Kong was dead, I thought he was wrong, but someone clearly was going on.
So it probably meant two things. That his friends in Hong Kong was finding it tough to live in the new environment after the CCP emerged victorious from those couple of years of Hong Kong riots. And that the white worshiping compadre class was on its way out. If they could not win in the streets, it meant they did not have the support of the people, nor the government. The government that mattered.
So in the end, the people who Prof Roach liked, they lost. End of story.
That is end of story for the Western mindset, because Hong Kong never really changed, only they put new people in charge. Hong Kong did not reinvent itself, but with the changes, sure looks like Hong Kong reinvented itself, to be even more China friendly.
So, one part of Hong Kong, clearly is dead. That is how it goes.
