I think situation is significantly different than 2014. Japan is significantly different with all the extreme moves it is making. China is significantly more powerful, more willing to use that power and extremely worried about Japan.

China used to give face to US allies in the past and also kinda kept its head down against US allies. But all that changed slowly since first trump era and then Covid.

I just don't see China giving any face to Takaichi ever. She is persona non grata similar to Lai from DPP. Japan getting APEC invite? maybe, but most certainly Takaichi will not be welcome.

But But But Haven't you heard? This Japanese journalist says Xi Jinping needs to meet Takaichi as a "win" to shore up his legitimacy before National Congress and show he is an eminent leader with a handshake. (Every accusation is a confession! The Japanese are so delusional, self-projection)

You are right, China is stronger and sees US violating the norms, so China can play the same game.
Xi should not invite her just like US refused to invite Hong Kong leader (who is under US sanctions) to San Francisco APEC summit, so US violated APEC protocol. China should do the same to Takaichi is she refuses to withdraw her Taiwan comments. Invite the economic minister to meet the bare minimum of APEC like US did.

Does China have a ton of oil reserves that it has not yet reported?
It doesn't even matter, just the reported amount is stable.

Thing is people only have visibility into China's oil imports and then assumed China's oil import is China's oil consumption.
But China runs $1.2 trillion trade surplus, more than enough to buy 100% of all traded oil on the planet and still have $600B surplus, there's no reason to believe China actually needs the amount of oil it has been importing since forever.

Looks like Pakistan still has a lot of issues related to bureaucracy and corruption with Gwadar Port operations preventing efficiency. Hope it can still be fixed to live up to it's potential.

means nothing. The company "Hangeng Trade" is only massively reported by NON Chinese media outside of China. The company barely exists in Chinese internet sphere. The only possible relationship (by the PinYin name Hangen) is a private company "Hangen e-business" registered in Hebei province involved in buying a piece of land doing biopharmacy. That is suspicious already because company is not supposed to get involved in something that they are not registered for. The company in Pakistan is supposed to be a branch and it was making dunkey skin for tranditional medince "驴皮阿胶" which is biopharmacy.

In short it may be a private person from China doing dubious business practice who faced finacial problems. This is common for this kind of "clever" bunisnessmen in China. This kind of business come and go frequently in China.

I'd be more inclinded to attribute the closure to Hangeng itself rather than to Gwardar port administration or Pakistan. Considerring the under covarage to nearly non of this company and the news in China but disporportionaly coverage in the west, I'd say that the western propaganda machine is at full speed.

China runs $1.2 trillion trade surplus, US runs $1 trillion trade deficit, there is no game of chicken here, China's just gently reminding America who run the show.

History repeats it's self.
Western traders, including those from the United States, had long sought a variety of Chinese products (including furniture, silk and tea), but found there were few products that China wanted from the West.
The whole free market thing was bullshit from the start. China had a massive surplus because there was nothing the west can offer China. It's funny that even the US government acknowledges this but ofcourse has to paint China bad with same message of China should learn from the Opium wars aka surrender your country.

Fast forward to China joining WTO the US destroyed China's soybean production.

But this time we are strong.

Funny thing is there was ONE actual thing that the US could unequivocally offer to China that was of extremely HIGH value. What's that? The offer of keeping the global seas FREE and OPEN for trade. Something that their OWN mantra repeated over and over and over again for the last half century. What has the US government done with this one thing they have to offer that is worth something? Completely destroyed it in the name of quelling domestic nationalistic anxiety over what is essentially loss of face over possibly not being the unquestioned top dog in global hegemony. Yes, that's right, they killed their own value proposition in the name of EGO. Insane.

Not so much nothing the west can offer China as that they put restrictions on things China wants. As a result China is forced to develop those things by itself, and the progress is so fast that soon the only thing China will want is for Western Leaders to study XJP Thought 8 hours a day.

Even Francis Fukuyama, of the "The End of History and the Last Man" fame, openly admits that China has created a viable alternative to the Western liberal democracy. Yet some Chinese "dissent" who has not set foot in China since 2019 daydreams he can bend the Chinese society according to his will. The very fact that the Financial Times publishes such a non-story demonstrates how desperate Western MSM has become when reporting events in China.

Iran war is not the only thing that backfired recently.

What a shock! Western "Chinese consultants" can make a living only if they smear China!

China's economy is growing at an annualized rate of 5%, while RMB/CNY probably appreciates even faster. Some Western MSM from a parallel universe:

Trump’s war on Iran has China in a chokehold

As the US president prepares to visit Beijing, he may have ended his hosts’ decades-long growth miracle
