In the past, the tacit understanding between the two sides was that official forces would not land on the island, while the CCG had already established routine patrols at sea for a full year. In the latter half of last year, there were reports that Japanese officials were privately advising fishermen not to approach.
My view is that the tacit understanding will continue for some time, but maritime confrontation will inevitably escalate, developing towards the situation like Sierra Madre, it remains there as a symbol, but the number of CCGs surrounding it will only increase.
Takaichi's militarization of the SDF and the fortification of Okinawa will let to the increase of the PLA's involvement, but I don't think that final push will be taken. Diaoyu Island itself has little military value.
