Beihang/BUAA with a paper on SiO2/SiO2 CMC. SiO2 is quartz. So this appears to be quartz fiber/Quartz composite material, which is a very high end and costly fiber.

this is a evaluation of tensile damage based on x-ray computed tomography and acoustic emission.

The tensile properties of the composites were minimally affected by high temperature of up to 800 C. Brittle fracture characteristics were observed at both room temperature and high temperature.

According to AECC's official Weibo account, China's first fully 3D printed aero engine (a turbojet with 160kg-thrust) has passed compressor performance assessment.

it needs polishing.

if i interpret Polishing word, it means need more precision in manufacturing. looks like WS-15 is not passing quality check. Hmmm

@Alfa_Particle now CMC is very much possible in WS-15 just like F-135.
CMC is basically a given IMO. Just a matter of where and how much.

But I'll be lying if I said that this doesn't leave a bad taste in my mouth. I expected service birds with them to pop up since Q2 this year.

Three layers of interim engines, it's like they're growing a friggin onion here. Fine, take your time, but I better see them during the parade.

This is why there are interim engines. The WS-10 will have to shoulder things along for a little bit more.

At the risk of sounding like an optimistic fan boy,

1) "polishing" does sound like something for ceramic composites,

2) the WS-10C (plus any upcoming variants) is doing well and the PLAAF can wait for optimization and improvement of the WS-15 and its mass production process.

Yes, I am looking at an over-bright side of things but I'm pretty much unconcerned. After the WS-10 and WS-20, I think we know that when it is ready it'll be in production.
