Lee Kuan Yew was truly a visionary.

How should one assess Xi Jinping?

He has had a tougher life than Hu Jintao. His father was rusticated, and so was he. He took it in stride, and worked his way up. It has not been smooth sailing for him. His life experiences must have hardened him. He is reserved—not in the sense that he will not talk to you, but in the sense that he will not betray his likes and dislikes. There is always a pleasant smile on his face, whether or not you have said something that annoyed him. He has iron in his soul, more than Hu Jintao, who ascended the ranks without experiencing the trials and tribulations that Xi endured. I would put him in Nelson Mandela’s class of persons. He is a person with enormous emotional stability who does not allow his personal misfortunes or sufferings to affect his judgment. He is impressive.

BEIJING, May 16 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Xi Jinping has called on persons with disabilities to draw spiritual strength from role models, overcome difficulties and challenges, and pursue their dreams.

Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, made the remarks in an instruction to a gathering held on Friday to commend role models with disabilities and people who have made outstanding contributions in helping those with disabilities.

The gathering came as the country marks the 35th national day of assisting persons with disabilities, which falls on May 18 this year.
Xi noted that persons with disabilities are an important force advancing Chinese modernization, and they are also a special and vulnerable group that needs more support and attention.

He urged efforts to further improve the social security net as well as the care and service system for those living with disabilities, and ensure their equal rights and interests.

Party committees and governments at all levels should prioritize work related to disability affairs and keep improving the quality of public services for the disabled, Xi said.

He called on federations for persons with disabilities and workers engaged in disability affairs to improve their service capacity and quality.

Xi encouraged people with disabilities to draw inspiration from role models, overcome challenges, pursue their dreams, and contribute to building a strong nation and realizing national rejuvenation.

Premier Li Qiang, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, met with the representatives to the gathering and had a group photo with them.

A total of 200 role models with disabilities, along with 200 outstanding units and 60 exceptional individuals supporting disability services, were honored at the gathering.

Based on some reporting from China it looks like Xi is taking full control of the 15th 5 year plan. last 5 year plan had a heavy touch of Li Keqiang and Wang Huning. Neither of these two have a role in drafting the next plan (certainly not Li, but perhaps Wang will have some informal influence at the will of Xi). Whoever Xi's premier advisor is right now will probably have the heaviest influence on this 5 year plan.

What do you think is the focus of the next 5 year plan? More high tech, more equality measures? More opening up? More private market? I Hope they relax the internet personally. Shits a pain in the ass

From Chinese state media, the next 5 year plan is gonna prioritize some of the following:
To drive growth, China will accelerate the intelligent and low-carbon transformation of traditional industries, while nurturing integrated clusters of strategic emerging industries, Cheng said, adding that the integration of digital technology into daily life will provide more equitable access to public services such as governance, education and healthcare.

Compared with five years ago, China faces greater uncertainties and challenges in the external environment, particularly due to the tariff and trade wars launched by the United States. The global governance landscape is facing greater instability, the international order may be subject to reshaping, and geopolitical conflicts and security risks are likely to increase, observers said.

Speaking at a symposium on the 15th Five-Year Plan in Shanghai on April 30, Xi highlighted the need to consider the impact of the changing international landscape on the country's socioeconomic development, adapt to changing situations and grasp strategic priorities in formulating the important document.

So more of the same we've been seeing in the past few years with industrial upgrading, "new productive forces", investment in high-tech, and emphasis on self-reliance to protect from US tech decoupling. Also the planning is going to be more aware of external/international changes, because the world is experiencing 百年未有之大变局, like Xi Jinping said to Putin before
