Trump's team wants their cake & eat it too. But that's impossible under the normal laws of economics, so their only way to achieve it is by creating a new economic system, in which the US is the lord of the earth, and everyone else pays tribute. Literally a global Plaza Accords in which the rest of the world voluntarily appreciates their currency vs. the dollar so US manufacturing can be more competitive, without challenging the US dollar's status as reserve currency. So effectively, the world will subsidize US manufacturing so that they can... continue to sell to the US what left over manufacturing the US gives them.
Taking this deal means going down the path of Japan or Germany, both vassals of the US, where you neither have great purchasing power (because your currency is not allowed to replace the dollar) nor great manufacturing (because you had to appreciate your currency). It's a trap for those without a choice, and China should realize that it does have a choice.
