Thank you, I just went a bit off the edge there because it reminded me of another person on a certain forum who was trying to conclude the J-36 was powered by 3x RD-33 engines.. Baffling to me.

Yes, I know what you are referring to, that one was a bizarre conclusion.

One thing I've realized over the years is that with whether it's writing articles online, or making drawings, or tweets (all of which are easily linked), I need to take effort to safeguard and account for people interpreting things either too literally or not being able to think logically. Certain things either need to be omitted, or explicitly laid out so that they can be guided to the right conclusion.

Regarding the groove at the central line of fuselage bottom. I guess may be because the air inlet is thin sidewise thus it has to be longer from top to bottom. And the bottom of the air inlet is lower than the (central fuselage) thus the groove. This is prominent on the Flankers but not on J20 and J36, probably due to the size of air inlet of J20 and J36.

As to why they don't design all flat bottom fuselage, my guess is a fully flat bottom for J-XD(S) may produce more drag, and may be less stealth on front view?

Just my two cent. Feel free to comment.

Below diagram of F-18E/F is just for illustration only.

I just wanted to fix some past mistakes in my observations with the clearer photo. Red is the groove, yellow is what is clearly visible outlines, and on the weapons bay the yellow also is where there is a visible black seal like material similar to the the edges of the control surfaces, which points to a general weapons bay length. The orange bits are what I just made up to complete the yellow lines to form a better visual representation.

Chinese community netizens speculate that the side is occupied by the landing gear storage compartment.:eek:View attachment 150211

Saw this version of the photo from a podcasts. Not sure about its authenticity, but IF real, it shows the sidebay with a bit more detail.
